Elephant Transit Home
If you are particularly interested in elephant rehabilitation then we recommend a visit to the Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe National Park. Here, orphaned and injured elephants are treated and prepared to be released back into the wild with minimal human contact. During your visit you'll see the elephants but there is no interaction available as they need to be released back into the wild.

Enjoy a trek through the rolling Horton Plains, where you can watch herds of Sambar Deer and spot a great number of bird species, some endemic to Sri Lanka, and some only found within the Horton Plains. Primarily grassland, the plains are also home to dramatic cliffs and beautiful waterfalls. If you can, head to World's End, a sheer precipice with a drop of 870 metres.

Kandy Day Experience
The Temple of the Tooth is set within a royal palace complex and is believed to house the tooth relic of Lord Buddha. The tooth was fought over by ancient kings who believed that whoever was in possession of the relic had a divine right to the land. Today it is safely encased in seven golden caskets within the beautifully embellished temple. Covering 147 acres. Sri Lanka's largest botanical gardens are a tropical paradise renowned for their stunning orchid collection. Watch fruit bats roosting high in the trees and look our for more than 80 species of birds including the Sri Lankan hanging parrot and rare black eagle.

Kandy to Nuwara Eliya by train
To experience Sri Lanka at a slower pace, the train between Kandy and Nanu Oya, close to Nuwara Eliya, is quintessentially Sri Lankan and offers stunning views. The track makes its way through a range of landscapes including tea plantations, forests, valleys and cliffs. Seats are reserved, and food is available on board, alternatively you can take a packed lunch or buy food along the journey from hawkers. The entire journey takes approximately four hours.

Minneriya National Park Safari
Hop in your open top jeep for a few hours of exploration. Head into the park keeping an eye out for the array of beautiful birds, including magnificent peacocks, and other wildlife found in the park. Minneriya is also famed for its elephants, especially during the drier months when they congregate at water sources.

Polonnaruwa was an ancient city, and the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura. There are an array of temples ruins as well as the palace and the rest of the city. Whilst here, you can wander freely through the ruins or hop on one of the many tuk-tuks in the area. You can also buy a guide book or hire a guide at the museum. If you wish to enter you must have your shoulders, chest and upper legs covered and must remove your shoes in the temples. As the stone can get very hot at midday, it is best to go early or a little later, or take a pair of socks to slip on.

Sigiriya is a beautiful region and UNESCO World Heritage Site dominated by a colossal granite rock that emerges from lush jungle and can be seen for miles around. After murdering his father in the 5th Century, King Kasyapa chose this impenetrable rock the be the site of his new capital and palace. Sigiriya Rock Fortress, also known as the 'Lion's Rock' stands at 180 metres tall and is a magnificent sight. Ascend the steep stairs - 1200 in total - to reach the dizzying summit of the fortress, admiring the colourful frescoes that adorn the side of the rocks along the way. This challenging climb is rewarded with spectacular views over the pretty water gardens, canal and jungle beyond.
