Recommended highlights

Day 1: Mumbai Board the Deccan Odyssey following a traditional welcome and drink at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station.

Day 2: Aurangabad (Ellora Caves) This morning the train will arrive in the city of Arungabad and you will have some free time to either enjoy the facilities on the train or visit a spa at a city hotel (treatments extra cost). Following lunch, head to the UNESCO-listed Ellora Caves where 34 grand monasteries and temples have been carved into the rock face. Continue on the 12th-Century Daulatabad fort and then return to the train to refresh before dinner at a restaurant in the city.

Day 3: Aurangabad Head out on a tour of the city. The first stop will be Bibi-ka-Maqbara which may look a bit familiar as it is a replica of the iconic Taj Mahal. Later, visit a weaving centre where Himroo fabric is made and then return to the Deccan Odyssey where you will be able to spend a relaxed afternoon.

Day 4: Ramtek (Pench National Park) The train will arrive in the city of Ramtek this morning and you will disembark and travel to Pench National Park. Embark on a game drive and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife species such as tiger, wolf and nilgai.

Day 5: Tadoba On arrival in Chandrapur station, head to Tadoba, the state's oldest and largest National Park and a renowned tiger reserve. Enjoy an early morning safari and another opportunity to see tigers and other wildlife species in the wild.

Day 6: Jalgaon (Ajanta Caves) Following breakfast, see another fine example of rock-cut architecture at the Ajanta Caves. Witness Hindu and Buddhist carvings, painting and sculptures a selection of caves before returning to the train.

Day 7: Nashik In the holy city of Nashik wander along the banks of the River Godavari and visit the local market and try bartering for some bargains. This afternoon visit a local vineyard and see the methods – both ancient and modern – of producing sparkling wine. Return to the train for your last evening on board.

Day 8: Mumbai Following breakfast on board, alight at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Railway Station.
