Sun Peaks, Kamloops & Clearwater Holidays
Pick from a trio of scenic stop-off points in British Columbia’s rolling interior and take a beat on your cross-province road or rail trip.
Kamloops is probably best known as the overnight pause on the Rocky Mountaineer route between Vancouver and the mountains. However, it’s surrounded by lakes and rivers, golf courses, canyons and hiking and biking trails so if you’re travelling by road, it’s easy to fill at least a day or two here. There’s area is rich in indigenous culture too – these are the traditional territory of the Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc.
If mountain playground vibes are more your thing, head to the village of Sun Peaks should be your pick. It’s smaller and more intimate than the likes of Whistler, but it has oodles of European-inspired charm and more rolling hills type of landscape. A bit further north (about 80 miles – a short hop in Canadian terms) is Clearwater, the gateway to one of BC’s most spectacular provincial parks: Wells Gray. We suggest staying a couple of nights here so you’ll have a whole day in the park chasing waterfalls deep in the Cariboo Mountains. Helmcken is the most iconic of the park’s 42 named roaring falls, but also make sure you check out the unique Spahats Creek Falls and Dawsons Falls where water cascades over 90-metre-wide lava beds.
