 Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains

Find your feet among Marrakech’s palaces, souks, and neighbourhood bakeries, cook lunch in a local home, then head into the Atlas foothills for a day in the Ourika Valley.

Marrakech can be dazzling and a little disorientating. That’s part of the fun, but having someone show you the way is a very good start. Spend three nights in a riad inside the medina, the city’s walled old quarter. A full-day guided walk connects the famous landmarks with places you might otherwise pass by, from a communal bakery to working craft studios. The next day, pick out ingredients at the market and turn them into lunch in a family home. Then leave the city for three nights in the High Atlas foothills. An included day in the Ourika Valley introduces you to local growers, a women’s cooperative, and village artisans. Keep your final full day free for a guided walk in the hills or an afternoon by the pool.

Recommended itinerary

Day 1

Marrakech

Arrive in Marrakech and take a private transfer to your base in the medina. Settle in and take your first look around the old city. Tomorrow, you’ll have a guide to show you how it all fits together.

Day 2

Marrakech

Your full-day walking tour brings the medina into focus. See the Koutoubia Mosque’s minaret, the decorated courtyards of Ben Youssef Madrasa, once a school for Islamic learning, and the Bahia Palace. After lunch at a local restaurant, visit Le Jardin Secret, the spice square, and workshops where craftspeople work with leather, metal, and ceramics. You’ll stop at a communal bakery to see where neighbours bring their bread to be baked, then share mint tea and pastries in a traditional riad. The walk finishes at Jemaa el-Fna, Marrakech’s great public square. With any luck, you’ll come away with your bearings and a mental note of places you may want to revisit.

Day 3

Marrakech

Go to the market with a local host to choose vegetables, spices, and fresh bread. Then walk to a family home for your half-day cooking class, preparing dishes such as tagine or harira soup before sitting down to lunch together. The afternoon is yours. If you’d like to see another side of Marrakech after dark, add an evening of traditional storytelling, dinner, and Sufi music.

Day 4

High Atlas Mountains

A private transfer takes you from Marrakech into the High Atlas foothills. Your kasbah-style mountain stay begins here, with the afternoon free to take in the views or head for the pool.

Day 5

Ourika Valley

Spend the day discovering the people and landscapes of the Ourika Valley. Visit a women’s cooperative and an organic farm, then sit down to a locally sourced lunch prepared by a community initiative. Later, meet village artisans in their workshops and see the skills behind what they make.

Days 6 & 7

High Atlas Mountains

The final days are yours to decide. Add a guided walk for more time among the mountain villages and hills, or find a spot by the pool and see how long lunch can last. When it’s time to check out, a private transfer takes you back to Marrakech airport.
