A hilltop hideaway with pool suites, kitchen garden food, and the Atlas all around
At the end of a winding climb, Kasbah Bab Ourika appears almost the same colour as the hillside. That’s no accident. The main kasbah is built from pisé, a traditional Berber technique that compacts earth into thick walls, naturally helping to keep the interiors cool in summer and warm in winter.
From here, the Ourika Valley spreads out below and the High Atlas rises beyond it. Gardens spill down the hill with roses, olives, herbs, and vegetables for the kitchen, while inside, vintage rugs, Art Deco furniture, Moroccan antiques, and handmade textiles make every room feel collected rather than coordinated. Walk to a nearby village, book a hammam, or simply find a terrace and watch the light move across the valley.
Why we love Kasbah Bab Ourika
-
The views follow you everywhere. From breakfast terraces to the pool and higher rooms, the Ourika Valley and Atlas Mountains are rarely out of sight.
-
The gardens feed the kitchen. Herbs, fruit, and vegetables grow on site, with more produce bought from markets in the valley.
-
Garden Pool Suites sit among palms and olive trees, while Panoramic Pool Suites put a heated private pool between you and the valley.
-
The mountains are there to explore, not just look at. Local guides lead easy village walks and longer treks, and the chef can prepare a picnic to take with you.
Facilities
The gardens do a lot of the menu planning here. Organic herbs, fruit, and vegetables are picked on site, with extra ingredients bought from markets in the valley. Breakfast is best taken outside, lunch can be light by the pool, and dinner moves between the colonnaded restaurant and garden terraces. The cooking mixes Moroccan favourites with Mediterranean and European flavours, with menus changing according to the season.
The Beldi Spa keeps the focus on Moroccan treatments. Hammam rituals begin with eucalyptus black soap and exfoliation with a kessa mitt, while the longer treatment adds ghassoul, a mineral-rich clay, for the face and body. Massages, facials, and a Berber foot treatment are also available. Yoga is much less formal. Mats are available to borrow, with the gardens and terraces providing plenty of places to practise outside.
Pisé walls use compacted earth and provide natural insulation, while solar panels heat the buildings and water. Grey water is reused for irrigation, heat pumps reduce energy use, and the organic gardens supply the kitchen.
There’s no kids’ club, but there’s plenty to do if your family prefers being outdoors. Family Suites sleep four, Garden Deluxe Suites up to five, and the two-bedroom Panoramic Pool Suite gives four guests their own heated pool.
