Atlas Mountains Holidays

Hilltop kasbahs, guided village walks, and pools with serious competition from the view.

South of Marrakech, the road climbs through olive groves, terraced fields, and mountain villages long home to Amazigh communities. The slopes sharpen, the air cools, and Marrakech feels much further away than the mileage suggests.

Stay overnight and you can start with breakfast on a terrace, walk with a local guide through the valley and nearby villages, then come back for lunch, the pool, or both. Fruit, vegetables, and herbs are often grown in the gardens or sourced nearby.

At nearly 14,000 feet, Mount Toubkal is North Africa’s highest summit. The standard ascent usually takes two days from Imlil, although some itineraries allow three. You’ll need suitable mountain kit, good fitness, and an experienced guide. Snow and ice make it a more serious undertaking in winter. But not every Atlas walk needs to comes with a summit. You can choose a few hours around the Ourika Valley, Ouirgane, or Asni, instead of making a proper mountain undertaking of it.

Tell us whether you want boots and trekking poles by the door, a book by the pool, or a bit of both. We'll match you with a relaxed garden kasbah or a full-service luxury retreat, arrange the transfers and guides, and give the Atlas more than a hurried day trip. Stay overnight, and you'll have the valley in front of you after the day trippers leave, then wake up to it outside your window.

Community, Nature & Traditions in the Ourika Valley

You’ll head south from Marrakech into the green foothills of the High Atlas for a day centred on the people and projects of the Ourika Valley. At a women’s cooperative, you’ll learn about work such as producing argan oil, herbal cosmetics, or textiles. A visit to a small farm shows you how seasonal crops are grown in this mountain setting.

A community initiative prepares lunch with local ingredients, and you’ll have time to hear about the project over the meal. Later, you’ll visit a village where artisans work in their own workshops. If something catches your eye, you can buy it directly from its maker.

A Day in the High Atlas Mountains

You’ll leave Marrakech for the High Atlas, Morocco’s highest mountain range. As the road climbs, city streets give way to valleys, orchards, and villages on the mountainsides. A guided walk takes you past terraced fields and the irrigation channels that carry water to the crops, giving you a closer look at how people live and farm here.

The invitation into a local family’s home is the heart of the day. You’ll share a traditional lunch, then have time to explore a little further or stay for mint tea before heading back to Marrakech.

Luxury Atlas Mountain & Gourmet Lunch

You'll leave Marrakech behind and head towards Imlil, a mountain village surrounded by the peaks and valleys of the High Atlas. The journey alone is part of the appeal, with winding roads leading through changing landscapes and small Berber communities.

After time to explore the village and learn a little about daily life in the mountains, you'll stop at a local family home for mint tea and Moroccan hospitality. Depending on the group and conditions, there may also be an opportunity for a gentle walk through the surrounding countryside.

The day ends with lunch at Kasbah Tamadot, Sir Richard Branson's mountain retreat. The setting is hard to beat, with terraces looking out across the Atlas Mountains, while the menu showcases Moroccan flavours with a refined touch.
