 Kasbah Tamadot

Big Atlas views, brilliant little details

A character-filled mountain retreat with hillside Berber Tents, garden-grown food, and service that remembers the details.

Some hotels have a view. Kasbah Tamadot seems to have one around every corner. The main kasbah sits above the Asni valley, where tiled courtyards, fountains, and flower-filled gardens open towards the High Atlas. Inside, carved furniture, rich textiles, and antiques from former owner Luciano Tempo’s collection give every room its own personality.

Then come the details: bread baked in a traditional clay oven, mint tea poured by long-standing tea master Mohammed, Moroccan slippers and sunhats waiting in your room, and a team drawn entirely from Morocco, with most staff from nearby communities. Sleep in the kasbah, move onto the hillside in a Berber Tent, or take over a three-bedroom riad with its own pool.

Why we love Kasbah Tamadot

  • The service feels genuinely personal. The team is entirely Moroccan, most staff come from the local community, and many have worked here for years. That continuity is a big part of the warmth people remember.

  • The Berber Tents are worth leaving solid walls for. These are full-sized, air-conditioned rooms under canvas, with rolltop baths, large terraces, outdoor dining, and mountain-and-valley views. Some add a private hot tub.

  • Food comes with a strong sense of place. Vegetables and herbs grow in the kitchen garden, bread emerges warm from a traditional clay oven, and two restaurants give you a choice between polished kasbah dining and something more relaxed beside the tents.

  • On selected nights, the hotel sets up an open-air cinema beneath the stars. Cooking classes*, bread making, tennis*, mountain biking*, and guided walks give you plenty of other ways to spend the day.

Food keeps one foot firmly in Morocco, with seasonal produce from the hotel’s kitchen garden appearing alongside locally sourced ingredients and international favourites. Breakfast comes with mountain views, lunch can move beside the pool, and private dinners can be arranged on terraces or under the stars.

Kanoun Restaurant
The more intimate, dressed-up choice within the heart of the kasbah. Moroccan flavours sit alongside international dishes, with fresh seasonal ingredients and a wine list that includes Moroccan bottles. Mountain views complete the setting.

Asayss
Beside the Berber Tents and gardens, Asayss is more relaxed: sofas, communal tables, fireplaces, a bar, and even a pool table. Its name refers to a traditional gathering place for poetry and feasting, and the menu combines Moroccan and international cooking with seasonal local produce.

What's Included

Breakfast served on the terrace next to the pool bar (weather permitting) or in the Kanoun or Asayss restaurants.

Asounfou means relaxation in Berber, and the spa* combines Moroccan ritual with a much broader treatment menu. The Traditional Hammam is the one to know: 45 minutes of black soap, exfoliation, a neroli mask, argan wrap, and hair cleanse. The longer Ancestral Hammam adds a 60-minute hammam massage, while the two-hour Moroccan Tradition pairs a hammam with a full massage. There are also deep-tissue, hot-stone, and Moroccan massages, body treatments, facials, manicures, and pedicures. Treatments take place in the spa or can be brought to your room, suite, or Berber Tent for a surcharge. Beyond the treatment rooms, there’s an outdoor infinity pool overlooking the Atlas, a heated indoor pool with its own lounge, an open-air hot tub, gym, and two floodlit tennis courts with rackets and balls available to borrow.

The community connection runs much deeper than local sourcing. The Eve Branson Foundation, established with support from Kasbah Tamadot and Virgin Unite, works with surrounding High Atlas villages on education, skills training, and sustainable livelihoods. Guests can visit the weaving centre at Tamgounssi and woodwork centre at Tansghart, while locally made textiles and other craft pieces also appear throughout the hotel. Kasbah Tamadot’s team is entirely Moroccan, with most staff coming from the local community and exceptionally high staff retention. The hotel also grows herbs and vegetables, works with nearby suppliers and markets, composts or repurposes food waste, and supports wider recycling and energy-saving initiatives.

Kasbah Tamadot is much more family-friendly than its romantic mountain setting first suggests. The Kasbah Kids Club is for ages four to 12, with activities such as pottery painting, bracelet making, gardening, Berber calligraphy, and treasure hunts. Teens can get involved in guided walks, tennis, and cooking classes instead, and babysitting* is available with notice. Accommodation is particularly good for families. The two-bedroom Superior Suite keeps everyone close to the main hotel, while the Riad Pool Suite has a private heated pool and extra lounge space for children. The Riad Rooftop Tented Suite is another interesting option because its second tent can convert from a lounge into an additional bedroom.
