Colony Club by Elegant Hotels

A historic beachfront retreat in the heart of St James

Peeping out from palm-filled gardens, this plantation-style hotel offers a generous slew of activities, with excellent dining options and a spa just steps from the beach.

Founded as a private club in the 1940s, this award-winning hotel is built from coral stone with a plantation home style and plenty of Bajan charm. Make the most of the free watersports, yoga classes and turtle-spotting paddleboarding tours, or unwind by one of the four lagoon pools that meander through the palm-filled, mahogany-dotted gardens – a stay here can be as active or laid-back as you want.

Why we love Colony Club by Elegant Hotels

  • All motorised and non-motorised watersports are included and there’s a generous slew of other complimentary activities, from cooking demos to island tours.

  • The resort caters to families as well as couples, with family-friendly accommodation, four lagoon-style pools with cabanas and seasonable kids’ activities.

  • It’s ideally located in the heart of St James on Barbados’ Platinum West Coast, with a white-sand beach on the doorstep.

  • The food options are great, with regular themed nights and special private dining experiences at the Rum Vault.

Four restaurants and bars mean there’s plenty of choice here, and the restaurant is renowned for its themed nights to the weekly Seafood Buffet and Grill, bringing local musicians to play against a sunset backdrop. The hotel also has its own organic garden, with local ingredients featured on the menus

Laguna Restaurant
The resort’s main dining venue, this open-air restaurant serves international dishes with a Bajan twist, using ingredients from the hotel’s organic garden. Choose from sandwiches, burgers, sushi, salads and the fresh catch-of-the-day, and stay on for the weekly Steak Night, featuring live music and a buffet.

Sunset Deck Restaurant
Watch the sky turn peach from this stylish spot, which sits right in front of the ocean and serves fresh salads, sandwiches and seafood dishes. Don’t miss the daily happy hour and weekly Seaside Buffet and Grill, featuring fresh sushi, fish and steak with live entertainment and sweet treats.

Sunset Bar
The views from this bar are exceptional, and there’s a swim-up section with submerged barstools where you can sip a cocktail from the water as the sun goes down.

The Rum Vault
The first of its kind in Barbados, this unique vault features a huge range of international rums. Opt for the Storied Rum Dinner to learn about the spirit’s history, sample a three-course dinner with signature cocktails or indulge in Rum and Chocolate pairings for the ultimate indulgence.

The Rum Vault is especially impressive, featuring 150 rums from across the world and offering a regular schedule of events – from rum pairings to private dining experiences led by the vault chef.

The resort has an excellent fitness centre and runs daily exercise classes including yoga, Pilates and Zumba. It’s also home to two floodlit tennis courts.

If you’d rather stay dry, there’s a good selection of included land activities to choose from; embark on a historical walking tour of nearby Holetown, join an Organic Garden Tour and Cooking Demo, play a game of beach cricket (with a past West Indies cricketer, if you’re there at the right time) or head out on a complimentary island tour.

Motorised and non-motorised watersports are complimentary – from waterskiing and stand-up paddleboarding to tube rides and fishing with the resident chef. There’s also a free weekly stand-up paddleboard tour in search of turtles.
