We travelled with Kuoni who arranged private transfers to this resort and arranged our car hire for us when we wanted to tour the island. Here for two weeks,we found it useful to have both American Dollars and Bajan Dollars. Both currencies are welcome but if you want to use the local buses then Bajan Dollars are handy. We stayed in a junior suite on a room only basis. For us this was an excellent choice as we wished to be flexible to eat out when we wished. The junior suite for the two of us was a lovely comfortable room (enormous comfortable bed) and because it had a useful kitchenette we were able to eat breakfast in the suite on the balcony looking out to sea.The beach here is beautifully clean and much wider that further up the west coast in areas like Mullins Beach. The staff were friendly, attentive and very helpful. The hotel provides beach towels and dressing gowns and extras like 'The White Company' toiletries in the room and chocolates on Valentine's Night. Evening musical events were varied and the Calabash and Siam restaurant menus and food were good. This resort is not too far from the airport and also convenient for a short taxi ride to Oistins Fish Fry or St Lawrence Gap for bars and restaurants. All in all we would recommend this hotel for its location, its comfort and beautiful beach.
We stayed there for 10 nights and we loved it. Location- really good. Halfway between Oistins and at Lawrence gap. Bus stop a 5 minute walk away to head in either direction. Peaceful area off the main road. Beach- white soft sand. Some minor amount of sargassum weed but not out of control like the beach near the crane hotel. Water warm and clean, but a bit rough. Not exactly swimming water and could be very choppy but natural atleast. Nice but short stretch of beach next to the sandals royal resort for walking. The hotel offered water sports, snorkelling beach towels etc. Hotel- lovely. Quaint and 70s feel but modern fittings. Really nice foliage of trees and bougainvillea plants to keep the areas around the hotel cool and airy. If hiring a car plenty of space to park it. Pools- nice, clean and warm. Enough pools and the poolside bar was a nice touch. Plenty of seating available in and around the bar for happy hour. Restaurant- breakfast buffet is a must. Nice and daily varied mix of standard western and bajan hot food. Also egg station.Rest good selection of breakfast- porridge, cereals etc. Only slight disappointment was the lack of a varied menu for calabash cafe for dinner but the food was tasty. We didn’t need lunch after a huge breakfast so not sure what the lunch menu is like. Room- we had a standard room which was a massive 1 bed self contained flat on the ground floor near the back. Clean, modern, comfortable, AC, very useable electric stove and oven, large fridge freezer. Comfortable living room and outdoor patio with table/chairs and pool access. Cleaned everyday. Large bathroom with two sinks and shower. No tub in our room (not missed). Staff- all were amazing, friendly and approachable. Very helpful. Nikolai at reception helped organise our hire car. Marion and latoya at breakfast made amazing omelettes. Sonia at the bar made lethal but tasty drinks. Always willing to help and go out of their way, and not for tips. Made the stay even more enjoyable. Entertainment- good effort by the hotel for promoting local arts and music. It all depends on the crowd of the hotel - we had a relatively quiet crowd so didn’t seem as fun. But again varied- local festival, live singers, steel drums etc. Also a nice open air movie night. Had a beach bbq and managers cocktail special one night. Overall- would definitely come back here and stay. Would highly recommend.
Could be superb with a couple of changes!
We have just stayed at Bougainvillea for a week and have to say the people who work there are absolutely lovely - efficient, friendly and welcoming. The grounds are pretty and well kept, the rooms are clean and modern - we had great views of the beach and pool but worth noting there are no lifts. There is a pool bar and two restaurants on site where the service is very good, the food at the Calabash cafe was great, whilst I would say the food at the Siam Thai restuarant was average. Location is good, pretty much halfway between St Lawrence Gap with several bars and restaurants and Oistins (Friday night fish fry) - both are around a 20 minute walk away or 10 minutes in a cab (which we found to be sensibly priced). The one and only thing that I would change about this hotel is the sunbed situation....... let's just say there is a certain clientele who would get up before 6am to reserve their bed by the pretty family pool, to be fair some of them would be on their beds all day but at the other extreme others would turn up at 2pm. Meanwhile families with young children would arrive at 7.30am and find no place by the pool which must have been disappointing for them as the sea is pretty wavy and not suitable for young children. We're a middle aged couple with no kids so we went to the beach every day and swam in the sea, but I did feel for the families who really wanted to relax by the kids pool. The hotel management really need to sort that out.
Very good, could have been great
Last day at this lovely hotel on Maxwell beach. Lots of plus points including setting, providing you don’t mind fairly rough sea. Majority of staff are fantastic, few to mention are Roxanne at Siam’s, Ann, Donna and Nichole at Calabash for breakfast and Marion who makes great omelettes, Jose, Gregory and Sonia at pool bar. Nice to see owner, Gorden, going round hotel and speaking to guests. Negatives, make sure you get a room with view, we had requested this but got one of few rooms with no view (5110), even when checking in was assured we had this...it was dark so didn’t realise until next morning! Rooms can be noisy if you have inconsiderate guests staying next to you. Only one area for kids to swim and sun beds can be taken up by adults...seems unfair given they have two other pools and make use of pool kids can use as well. Not enough sun umbrellas and sun beds...people getting up at 6am to claim beds. All in all, would love to go back but would want a view or partial view of ocean.
We enjoyed this great hotel
We have stayed in many different locations in Barbados & friends recommended the Bougainvillea. This is a great hotel in a secluded setting, ideal for a peaceful holiday. The staff were excellent, as were the reception, concierge and room staff. The room was upgraded to a lovely one bed de lux suite , so spacious & a kitchen too. We were on the third floor which was ok as we are both good walkers as no lift. The view was spectacular down to the beautiful colourful gardens , pool bar and the beach/sea.Sadly the sea is rough here so unless you are a strong swimmer it’s not recommended, furthermore the hotel water sport opportunities were limited due to the turbulent sea. The two restaurants Calabash Cafe for all day meals and the Siam , good selection of Asian dishes are both good.Pool bar was popular with swim up stools, however Happy Hour at 3.30 is deffo too early and I would recommend this to start an hour later, oh and to include Pina Colada’s as every other bar offers them so it seemed penny(dollar 😂) pinching. A shame that there are few restaurants nearby meaning that we had to walk or get a Reggie bus to areas like St Lawrence Gap or Hastings where there are many great bars & restaurants. Perhaps a hotel shuttle to the local restaurants would be a nice option. At the managers cocktail party we met other guests , the bbq following was poor and expensive, then by 9.30 pm most guests had disappeared.r Seems that few people stay at the hotel bar / restaurants at night even when there is a singer , it was dead most nights both at 7 pm and 10 pm when usually guests mingle and enjoy a drink or two, a great shame, maybe another happy would help improve this situation. Whilst we did really enjoy this hotel, beach and setting for our next trip it would be preferable to stay where the water sports can be enjoyed and their are more local bars and restaurants.
