Where to go in California from coastal cities and rolling winelands to the sun-scorched desert and the lofty Sierra Nevada mountains

Most visitors to California will fly into one of the three major cities – San Francisco, Los Angeles or San Diego and spend a few days exploring before heading out to into the mountains or along the Pacific Coast. Alternatively, you may be travelling here by road from one of the neighbouring states of Nevada, Arizona or Oregon. In this case, your first stop in California is likely to be one of desert national parks in the south or the rolling wine lands in the north of the state. What we love about the Golden State is that on just one holiday you can take all it has to offer or spend your time in just one place; there will always be an excuse to return.
