The United States is the spiritual home of the road trip. There’s something special about taking to the open road and discovering the sights of the USA at your own pace, cruising along scenic roads and stopping to explore whenever and wherever the mood takes you.

Wild and rugged coastlines and cacti-scattered deserts or awe-inspiring National Parks provide the perfect backdrop to your independent adventures. Our USA experts are on hand to help you create a tailor-made itinerary. They can recommend hotels and sightseeing ideas and tell you about those hidden gems along the way.

Self-drives

Yes, you’ll be driving on the right (or wrong) side of the road in the USA, however, it doesn’t take too long to get to grips with the change. Outside the cities, the roads are almost empty and the rules of the road are refreshingly logical – you can turn right on a red light (unless advised otherwise) and there are first-come-first-served four-way junctions which are surprisingly easy once you get the hang of them.

There are a handful of iconic journeys, none more so than the historic Route 66. The ‘Mother Road’ once stretched from Chicago in the Midwest to the coastal city of Santa Monica and it hit its heyday in the post-war years. Although the road has been decommissioned and much of it has been bypassed by multi-lane highways, you can still take a detour and follow sections of the kitsch-lined route along the way. Just as iconic is California’s Pacific Coast Highway, also known as Route 1. This dream-like road hugs the beautiful coastline between San Francisco and Los Angeles and passes through the likes of the Instragram-worthy Big Sur and laid-back San Luis Obispo. Our Taste of the West self-drive not only includes a trip along this wonder road, but also a full loop around California’s highlight destinations such as San Diego, Death Valley and Yosemite National Park.

Car hire

Choice of cars
We work with a number of different car hire partners. You can choose from a range of cars, including economy and compact vehicles to full-size vans and SUVs. All of the cars are easy to drive, have all the mod cons and most are automatic. It is important that you consider the size of your group and how much luggage you will travel with when choosing your rental vehicle. We also recommend travelling with soft bags as they are easier to load into vehicles.

Licence info
Drivers must present a full licence held for a minimum of 12 months. The licence must be in English, or a foreign licence with an International Driving Permit (IDP). The minimum age is 21, or 25 for some car types.

Inclusions
Car hire inclusions can vary but typically include unlimited mileage, Goods & Services Tax (GST) and Standard Insurance with full excess.

One-way rentals
One-way rentals must be arranged in advance and are subject to local drop off fees. They are not possible on economy grade cars.

Cross-border travel
Cars rented in the USA can be driven in any US state. The car must be returned to the location from which it was rented unless authorised otherwise. Cars that are rented in Alaska must be returned to Alaska. Cars rented in the USA can be driven into Canada but they must be returned to the USA unless pre-arranged which may be subject to trans-border fees.

Motorhomes

The convenience of only having to unpack once, quality vehicles and a range of rental locations and one-way hires – a motorhome holiday is a fun and adventurous way to see USA. Head out on the open highways, cruising away from the big centres and through iconic National Parks. All motorhomes are simple to operate and easy to drive with automatic transmission and power breaking and steering. As USA’s largest RV rental firm, Cruise America gives you the convenience of an array of pick-up and drop-off points (27 locations in USA) as well as the peace of mind of quality vehicles and comprehensive support should you need it.

We are pleased to offer a selection of motorhomes. The main difference between vehicle categories is the varying length and the passenger capacity. Cruise America have recently introduced a new smaller T17 vehicle, perfect for couples or those who do not wish to drive the bigger RVs on offer. These new trucks are available to pick up from Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Pheonix and San Francisco.
