Very good but not the best around
Superb service with a quirky half-tent half-chalet;mosquito net over the bed. Free mini-bar but hardly any time to use it! After the first night we wondered why the room was so hot - it was because the underfloor heating was on! I travelled without my laptop cable, but the front office staff managed to find one for me - I think one of the other staff lent it to me! One of our three days was a day trip to Addo Elephant Sanctuary which was a good contrast in itself. Slight drawbacks: the Safari Lodge is in a separate part of the game reserve and it is about a 15-minute frive there and back each time to get to the main part where the predators are. Only one very small pride (2 or 3) lions; we heard a lot about how expensive it was to keep them. A slight feeling of non-authenticity in that this area (like the other game reserves nearby) had been created from individual farms after the end of aparthied and stocked with wild animlas which were bought in. We were told stories of how some animals had died - especially in the early days - when the owners obviously didn't know as much about how to care for them as they do now. On leaving Amakhala we had 3 days at Shamwari, which was a whole big step up (in price too)
Top notch experience
We spent 3 days at the lodge in March at the end of a 10 trip in South Africa. The service was exceptional from the moment we turned up, it is clear all of the staff take great pride in making everyone feel welcome and looked after. The rooms are high quality, we had private plunge pool and outdoor showers (private however under trees with monkeys - all part of the adventure). Our guide - Martin - was in a class of his own, a person with an absolute passion for his profession. He is clearly passionate for the environment and the animals and is as knowledgeable as anyone I have ever met on all aspects of the reserve from plant life, bird life, geology and of course the animals. The food was also high quality, with a running joke amongst guests that we were either on safari drives or eating the whole time. A lovely stay, great scenery and safari experience - and the staff were always willing to do whatever they could t make us enjoy our stay (including getting a spider out of our room!!)
A great place to visit
We found the guides very informed. They made every effort to locate game and even allowed us to get off the vehicle at interesting places. We had the opportunity to walk very close to Giraffe and see 2 of the 3 lions in the reserve the lunch was very good even with Kudu.
We had a great Time Thanks
Stayed here for two nights and really enjoyed the whole experience. Martin our guide was very knowledgeble , food was very good and the huts where amazing with the little plunge pool and and outside area. Just a great experience. One thing to note is that the afternoon game drive stars a 3pm so try and arrive for that , and bring some warm clothes.
Excellent in every way. Beyond expectation. Seamus was a super guide, very knowledgeable and fun! Accommodation in Zebra at Woodbury lodge was perfect, saw almost every animal on the sheet, enjoyed the night drive when the hippos were out. Food and staff delightful.
