This African-themed resort close to the sands of Maspalomas is made for easygoing holidays filled with activities and adventures.
Taking its cue from the varied cultures of the continent that lies just 93 miles to the east, Lopesan Baobab Resort is one of the area’s most eye-catching options. Sip cocktails in a grotto bar with views of a life-sized retreating elephant, experience the flavours of Africa in a host of appealing restaurants or pick a room with views of Maspalomas’s rolling desert dunes. If you like water, you’re in luck. As well as the beach 300 metres away, there are seven outdoor pools, some of them large enough for palm-studded islands and integral rustic pool bars. There are corners of the landscaped grounds for restorative snoozes, packed activity programmes for all ages and lots of live entertainment, striking the perfect balance between downtime and action stations.
Why we love Lopesan Baobab Resort
-
With seven outdoor pools to choose from, including one for older children with a water slide, you can match your dip to your mood.
-
From snakeskin-effect headboards to life-sized model animals in the gardens, the African design touches are playful but not over the top.
-
There’s a choice of family rooms, including poolside versions, and spacious pads with pools or dune-view balconies for romantic breaks.
-
Its nine bars and restaurants have plenty of international favourites, but also innovative creations featuring a host of African ingredients.
Rooms
There’s a clear African theme in the 677 rooms and suites, from the leopard-print headboards to the earthy tones and natural materials that feature throughout. You can fit a young family into both the Double Standard Room and Double Standard Garden View Room, while those with older children will find their perfect fit in the Family Room or the marginally large Double Family Pool Room set beside two of the resort’s seven pools. There’s a more romantic, couple-pleasing feel to the Double Deluxe Pool Rooms, where you can enjoy a dip in a private section of pool right from your terrace. Other indulgent options for two include the Double Superior Rooms, which look out over the Maspalomas dunes, the Junior Suites and the Senior Suites, both of which have a separate living room.
Facilities
Four restaurants – two buffet-style and two à la carte – are complemented by a pair of atmospheric pool bars and three characterful bars, while upgraded meal plans bring dine-around benefits at nearby sister properties.
Marula
Enjoy a wide choice of international dishes, plus an African-themed day every week, in one of the two buffet restaurants where included meals are served.
Baobab
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the second buffet restaurant has a wide repertoire of world favourites and African-themed decor.
Pili Pili
Overlooking the pool, this relaxed venue has a family-friendly menu to match, featuring salads, grills, pizza and pasta.
Akara
Reservations are essential at the grown-up, evening-only à la carte restaurant, which takes an innovative approach to African cuisines and ingredients.
Henry Stanley
Linger over cocktails, smoothies and more-ish milkshakes overlooking a waterhole complete with an elephant statue in this quirky bar designed to look like a cave.
Mungo Park
This rustic retreat on an island in the largest of the swimming pools is a chilled-out setting for a refreshing drink with or without alcohol.
Samuel Baker
Right by the reception desk, the lobby bar has plenty of indoor and outdoor space and a drinks list that ranges from coffee and juices to sangria and cocktails.
Richard Burton
With its safari-lodge looks, this spacious bar and café serves up coffee, tea, snacks and cocktails.
Dodori
There’s never a dull moment at the central bar, where you can enjoy live performances in the huge interior or catch up with the latest sporting events on the terrace’s big screens.
You won’t be able to help smiling as you gaze out from the grotto-like Hanry Stanley pool bar at what looks like an elephant retreating into the greenery.

The focus here is on active fun, though there is a beauty and hairdressing salon that also offers massages. There is an impressive gym, tennis and padel courts, table tennis, a range of exercise classes, bicycle rental and free shuttles to nearby golf courses.
The resort has seven outdoor freshwater pools in a range of shapes and sizes, from the vast freeform Rio & Mungo to the two small pools with slides for tiny tots and older children. It has its own dive centre, while other watersports can be arranged.
With, among other things, solar panels to provide hot water, a comprehensive recycling programme and an irrigation system that reuses wastewater, Lopesan Baobab Resort takes the goal of reducing its impact on the environment very seriously.
Families will appreciate everything from the programme of entertainment and activities just for kids to the (paid) babysitting service and good-sized, well-thought-out rooms.
