This itinerary invites you to slow down and discover southern Italy in a more meaningful way, travelling through the heart of Puglia before ending amid the Baroque beauty of Lecce. Along the way, you’ll encounter landscapes shaped by olive groves and ancient stone towns, where traditions are lived rather than preserved. From the extraordinary cave city of Matera and the Trulli of Alberobello to relaxed coastal stays and Lecce’s elegant historic centre, each stop reveals a different layer of the region’s character. Day 1

Arrive Bari

Arrive in Bari, pick up your car or hop in your private transfer to your hotel for a one‑night stay. If time allows, begin exploring Bari Vecchia, the atmospheric old town, where narrow lanes, lively piazzas and everyday local life set the tone for your journey. A highlight is walking through the famous pasta‑making streets, where nonnas can be seen hand‑rolling orecchiette outside their homes.

Day 2

Matera

Head inland from the Adriatic coast to Matera, a remarkable city shaped by centuries of history and carved directly into the landscape itself. On arrival, explore the UNESCO‑listed Sassi District, where ancient cave dwellings are carved directly into the rock. As evening approaches, be sure to experience Matera’s blue hour, when the fading daylight and soft illumination transform the city into a truly magical spectacle — best enjoyed from viewpoints such as Piazzetta Pascoli or near the Convento di Sant’Agostino.

Matera Bread Workshop
Puglia & Basilicata

Treat your tastebuds to a journey back in time with this immersive bread-making workshop. You’ll head to a historic bakery in Matera, where an expert will teach you how to rustle up a delicious loaf using time-honoured artisanal methods. Once the aprons are off and the loaves are out of the oven, you’ll get to tuck into your own freshly baked bread.

• Duration: half day
• Only bookable for guests staying at Palazzo Del Duca hotel

Days 3-4

Alberobello

Continue through rural Puglia to Alberobello, famous for its Trulli houses with their conical stone roofs. Spend time exploring the town’s unique architecture, including the Trullo Siamese and the Trullo Church of Sant’Antonio. A second day allows for relaxed exploration, with the option to visit nearby Polignano a Mare, dramatically perched above the Adriatic Sea, or to enjoy the surrounding countryside and regional cuisine at an unhurried pace.

Days 5-7

Torre Canne & Adriatic Coast

Travel towards the coast and settle into Torre Canne, a laid-back seaside area known for sandy beaches and traditional fishing villages. Over three nights, enjoy an easy balance of exploration and downtime. Highlights include a visit to Ostuni, the iconic white city, offering sweeping views across olive groves and the Adriatic Sea. Early risers are rewarded here — the sun rises directly over the Adriatic, and experiencing sunrise near the lighthouse is a wonderfully local moment, often accompanied by a simple espresso at a nearby café.

Days 8-10

Lecce

Travel south to Lecce, often referred to as the “Florence of the South”. Spend time exploring Lecce’s elegant Baroque old town, where richly decorated churches and honey‑coloured stone façades line atmospheric streets and piazzas. Enjoy the city at an unhurried pace, with time to browse boutiques, linger in cafés or unwind at your hotel. Golf courses and spa packages (organised at the hotel) provide the perfect balance to the cultural exploration experienced earlier in the journey.

Lecce Walking Tour
Puglia & Basilicata

Often referred to as the ‘Florence of the South’ Lecce is a showcase of Baroque art and one of the best ways to appreciate its beauty is on foot. Starting at Porta Napoli, the city’s gateway, walk along Via Palmieri, where you can admire the impressive architecture and the refined balustrades of Palazzo Balsamo. Continue through the charming Piazzetta Falconieri, a perfect example of a traditional Salento courtyard, before reaching the magnificent Piazza Duomo, the religious heart of Lecce and one of the most impressive examples of Italian Baroque. Stroll along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, past the Church of the Theatines to Piazza Sant’Oronzo, where famous landmarks such as the Roman amphitheatre, Appian Way’s last column, the Sedile, and San Marco Church highlight the city’s rich history. The tour finishes at the iconic Basilica of Santa Croce and the Palazzo dei Celestini, among the finest representations of Lecce Baroque.

• Duration: 1½ hours to 2 hours
• Group experience
