A remarkable Kasbah hideaway where historic riads, rooftop views, and intricate Moroccan design come together
This is one to book for the building as much as the bedroom. La Sultana winds through five restored historic riads, where carved cedar, hand-cut zellige, sculpted plaster, tadelakt, marble, and copperwork give each courtyard and room its own character. It reveals itself gradually, through staircases, patios, fountains, gardens, and tucked-away corners, before opening onto vast rooftop terraces above the Royal Kasbah. From here, the Saadian Tombs sit almost below you, and the Atlas Mountains rise beyond the city on a clear day. With just 28 individually designed rooms and suites, it has the intimacy of a riad with the service and facilities of a five-star hotel.
Why we love La Sultana Marrakech
-
The history is part of the design, not simply a backdrop. The five riads were restored and connected while keeping their different identities, and some of the vaulted spaces were once part of a grain store used to supply the royal family.
-
Upstairs feels like another hotel entirely. The rooftop terraces spread across the Kasbah, with gardens, loungers, dining tables, and places for sunset drinks. Look out across the old city towards the Koutoubia and, on clear days, the Atlas Mountains.
-
The location makes Marrakech wonderfully walkable. The Saadian Tombs are almost next door, while El Badi Palace, Bahia Palace, Jemaa el-Fna, and the souks are all within walking distance.
-
There are clever ways to get beyond sightseeing by checklist. Start with the hotel’s three-hour Urban Safari through the Kasbah and Mellah or go shopping for fresh ingredients at a nearby market before learning to make tagine on the rooftop cooking terrace.
Facilities
Meals move around the hotel with the time of day. Lunch is up on the Bahia rooftop at La Table du Souk, where Moroccan market flavours come with views across the Kasbah. Dinner shifts down to the courtyard at La Table de La Sultana, while Odette takes things back upstairs for cocktails and mezze as the lights come on across Marrakech. The kitchen stays closely tied to Morocco too, sourcing from small producers, local markets, and the hotel’s own gardens.
La Table du Souk
A relaxed rooftop lunch spot overlooking the Moulay El Yazid Mosque. The menu takes its cue from Moroccan markets and street food, with seasonal salads, couscous, grilled fish and seafood. Ingredients are sourced from Slow Food producers including Taliouine saffron, Alnif cumin, Souss argan oil, and Zerradoun salt, with at least 50% organic breakfast options.
La Table de La Sultana
The more refined dinner setting, gathered around the courtyard and pool. Moroccan ingredients and traditions sit at the heart of the menu, with a French influence in the cooking and presentation.
Odette Rooftop Bar & Mezze
The informal evening option for Mediterranean-inspired small plates and cocktails with the medina below. Rooftop opening varies with the season and weather.

The spa* is all pink marble, tiled hammams, lantern light, and cool stone, and the experience to know about is the Royal Hammam. It starts with traditional black soap and a vigorous exfoliation using a kessa glove, followed by either a purifying ghassoul clay mask or a moisturising argan wrap. Add an argan-oil massage afterwards for the full Moroccan ritual. There are also massage* and beauty treatments*, a Jacuzzi and sauna, plus gym, yoga, and Pilates spaces on the upper terraces.
La Sultana Marrakech has held Green Key certification every year since 2016. Its environmental programme includes LED lighting, water-saving fittings, drip irrigation, reduced linen changes, eco-labelled laundry products, and pool cleaning using ionisation and UV rather than conventional chemicals. The hotel also produces organic vegetables in its Marrakech communal garden, donates 50% of carbon emission costs to local charities (including Les Enfants de Dar Bouidar orphan project), and bans imported goods in boutiques in favor of local artisan crafts.
Children are welcome, but La Sultana suits families who want to explore Marrakech together rather than those looking for a kids’ club and a full programme of children’s activities. The heated pool gives you somewhere to regroup between sightseeing trips, cots and extra beds can be arranged, and experiences such as cooking classes and private tours can be adapted to different ages. For more space, the Deluxe Suite can accommodate two adults and two children and gives you a lounge area and private balcony.
