Golden hour' is more than a simple sunset; golden hour conditions include the sun sitting very close to the horizon, when the light from the sun has more of the Earth's atmosphere to travel through to reach your eyes. This means the short blue rays scatter and longer red, orange and yellow light waves pass through creating a beautiful golden, honey-toned hue. With over 1.9 million TikTok videos tagged under ‘#goldenhour’ accumulating billions of views, golden hour has become one of social media’s favourite times of day for travellers to post and share.

To help people find the world’s top places to experience golden hour, we have partnered with Mr Jim Dale, who has led British Weather Services, the UK's longest-established independent meteorological consultancy, since founding it in 1987, to find out what scientific metrics make up the perfect golden hour. Using his expertise, we analysed 165 popular sunset destinations around the globe and ranked them based on cloud cover, light pollution, artificial brightness, rainfall, wind and average sunset duration, giving them a final ‘golden hour’ score.

Cloud cover and light pollution can tell you where the sky will be clearest, but they can't capture the atmosphere of a destination and that's where years of hands-on travel experience come in. Top locations for golden hour in Europe

Greece leads the way for golden hour spots in Europe. Making it into the global top ten, Lindos Acropolis, perched 116 metres above the sea, it's the third most-visited archaeological site in the whole of Greece, and with cloud cover of just 27.1% and minimal rain, it has an uninterrupted and exquisite golden hour most evenings.

Cyprus's Paphos and Malta's Victoria, Gozo also feature, proving the Mediterranean's golden hour appeal isn't confined to just Greek shores.

Top locations for golden hour in Africa

Namibia leads the way in Africa. With its towering red dunes and 900-year old skeleton trees, Sossusvlei boasts the lowest cloud cover of any location in our entire data set. Nearby Damaraland and Etosha benefit from similarly still, unpolluted night skies.

Top locations for golden hour in North America

California is home to the best golden hour location in North America, with the San Joaquin Valley's wide-open farmland and calm winds producing warm, diffused sunsets. Sedona in Arizona follows close behind, its red rock formations turning a deeper orange as the sun drops, a personal favourite of meteorologist Jim Dale.

Top locations for golden hour in the Caribbean

St Kitts leads the Caribbean golden hour locations; its consistently clear skies and complete absence of light pollution make for some of the region's most reliable sunsets, best seen between December and April. Turks & Caicos and Antigua follow close behind, again benefiting from remote, unlit coastlines and minimal rainfall.

The world’s top 20 destinations for golden hour

At the top of our global ranking is Wadi Rum in Jordan, with a near-perfect golden hour score of 95.92/100, its vast desert wilderness, minimal cloud cover and zero light pollution makes it the ultimate location for an uninterrupted sunset. Namibia is the standout country in the top 20, claiming three of the top six spots (Sossusvlei, Damaraland and Etosha National Park), a testament to its wide-open landscapes and consistently clear skies.

Desert environments dominate the upper reaches of the ranking overall, with the Atacama Desert in Chile (4th), Wahiba Sands in Oman (5th) and the San Joaquin Valley in California (joint 8th) all featuring. Greece rounds out the top 20 with four entries, led by the Lindos Acropolis in Rhodes (9th).

1. Wadi Rum, Jordan

Golden Hour score — 95.92/100

Topping our list is Wadi Rum in Jordan, a desert wilderness that has been a protected UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011. With big red dunes, narrow gorges and towering cliffs, this spot is often referred to as ‘Mars on Earth’. It’s therefore no surprise that it’s been the backdrop for multiple famous films, including The Martian and Lawrence of Arabia.

Experiencing golden hour here means visitors see the giant rocks and dunes turn a deep orange, and with little cloud cover (15.3%), golden hour often feels otherworldly. With no light pollution in the desert, people can experience one of the best sunsets, with the opportunity to stay after for amazing stargazing. The local Bedouin people love welcoming people to the area, and there are multiple sunset tours available. With almost no rain (0.1mm) and comfortable wind speeds (20.1 km/h), the location is perfect for people looking for a place to see the sunset without the elements getting in the way.

2. Sossusvlei, Namibia

Golden Hour score — 94.93/100

Sossusvlei in Namibia takes second place, with a golden hour score of 94.93/100. It’s another desert location where golden hour transforms the landscape and dunes into a crimson and orange spectacle. With golden hour lasting just over 27 minutes, visitors can explore the white clay pan featuring dark, 900-year-old skeleton trees before settling down for the optimal golden hour time.

With the least cloud cover of all the top-ranking destinations (14.8%), Sossusvlei is the perfect destination year-round to capture golden hour. With the dunes reaching over 300m, there are plenty of high locations to see the sun sink, but the best spot is the Elim Dune, located right next to the Sesriem gate. This is because a lot of the gates close before sunset, so to avoid being locked in, book a tour or do your research before heading there.

3. Damaraland, Namibia

Golden Hour score — 91.83/100

Namibia showcases yet another entry, with Damaraland taking third place, scoring 91.83/100. Not just another desert landscape, Damaraland also boasts a rugged mountainous range and, in 2007, was made Namibia’s first UNESCO World Heritage site. With over 2,500 distinct rock engravings, it’s one of Africa’s largest concentrations of rock petroglyphs created by ancient hunter-gatherers.

Damaraland has a slightly shorter golden hour time (26.9 minutes) and cloud cover of 20.6%. Whilst clouds might put people off, Jim Dale says they are not always the worst thing during golden hour. He says: “Clouds on the horizon can often enhance the colours and shapes of the skyline and what lies below.”

4. Atacama Desert, Chile

Golden Hour score — 91.23/100

Another desert takes fourth place, with South America’s first entry, Atacama Desert in Chile, scoring 91.23/100 for golden hour. With lots of flat salt and Martian-like landscapes, it’s the driest non-polar desert in the world. Flamingos flock to the salt lagoons, alpacas graze nearby and Andean foxes roam the high-altitude heat, offering a rare chance to see an extraordinary variety of wildlife entirely in their element.

With more light pollution here, however, Jim Dale says this can be a distraction from golden hour: “Bright lights from any source will deaden your experience, while remote areas free of artificial lighting are far more idyllic.”

5. Wahiba Sands, Oman

Golden Hour score — 89.89/100

Oman’s Wahiba Sands follows, with a golden hour score of 89.89/100. A vast desert region in eastern Oman, with golden dunes reaching up to 100 metres high, where visitors can ride camels, drive 4x4 vehicles across the sand and partake in sandboarding. Golden hour runs to 27.2 minutes, with the sun setting between 17:00 and 18:00, and with Bedouin desert camps on the doorstep, an overnight stay makes for an easy and memorable extension to the trip.

Jim Dale notes that speaking to the locals is often the best way to experience golden hour, saying, “Local knowledge will also stand you in good stead when considering golden hour. As and when you arrive at your chosen destination, seek the knowledge of the locals, as even the most favoured locations won't stand still just for you.”

6. Etosha National Park, Namibia

Golden Hour score — 88.45/100

Another Namibia destination ranks sixth, with Etosha National Park scoring 88.45/100 for golden hour. Known as one of Africa's top safari destinations, this park offers visitors the chance to see elephants, lions, rhinos and zebras gathering in large numbers at the waterhole.

When sunset hits here, the sky turns into hues of orange and purple, and visitors can either watch golden hour from the elevated vantage point of Chudop Waterhole or the Onkoshi Resort located right on the edge of the Etosha Pan. Both options allow visitors to see wildlife as the sun sinks below the horizon. With slightly more cloud cover than the other Namibia destinations (28.5%), afternoon storms are more regular here. As they pass, the last rays of sunlight break through the clouds in dramatic beams, turning the sky into a picturesque moment unlike any other.

7. Okavango Delta, Botswana

Golden Hour score — 88.37/100

Okavango Delta in Botswana ranks next with a golden hour score of 88.37/100. The world's largest inland delta at 1,500km, the Okavango is a place unlike any other. Water from the river empties into the land rather than reaching the sea, flooding the landscape during the dry season and drawing hundreds of thousands of animals in search of water. Lions, leopards, elephants and hippos roam freely across this protected wilderness, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Jim Dale notes that the water acts as a reflective mirror for the sunset: “Whether it is an ocean, sea, or lake, there are few things more evocative than looking across a long stretch of water toward the distant horizon, with the added bonus of mesmeric reflections off the water's surface. Calm conditions or low wind speeds will certainly assist with that.” With the Delta's waterways being very flat and calm, they make for the perfect place to capture colourful reflections during golden hour and sunset.

8. San Joaquin Valley, California, USA

Golden Hour score — 88.22/100

The USA’s first entry comes from the San Joaquin Valley in California, scoring 88.22/100. Crowned one of the world's most productive agricultural regions, where almonds, pistachios, grapes, cotton and citrus are the top crops. With little light pollution (0.9) and low wind speeds (11.8km/h), the vast space is the perfect sunset spot for people who want to take in golden hour without the obstructing city lights.

9. Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Australia

Golden Hour score — 88.22/100

Australia’s Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park takes joint eighth spot as the world’s best destination for golden hour (88.22/100). As a World Heritage-listed national park, the area is protected to keep the Aboriginal land, which contains 50 million years of history, culture, adventure and natural wonder, in as pristine condition as possible. With sunsets here being classified as ‘world famous’, it’s no wonder the park takes one of the top spots. As the sun goes down, the giant sandstone monolith of Uluru shifts rapidly to a bright red-orange colour, transforming in front of visitors.

With some areas of the park prohibited from photography, visitors should make sure they read signage and are respectful to the locals. With multiple viewing spots across the park, 28 minutes of golden hour, and zero light pollution to soften the skies, the sunset experience here is hard to beat.

10. Lindos Acropolis (Rhodes), Greece

Golden Hour score — 87.97/100

The Lindos Acropolis in Rhodes rounds off the top 10, with a golden hour score of 87.97. As Europe’s first entry, the destination offers one of the longest golden hour times in the ranking (31.9 minutes).

With pleasant weather, low wind speeds (20.3km/h) and just 1.3mm of rain per day, visitors can enjoy the first part of golden hour from one of the many rooftop bars, watching the sun sink over the famous, white-washed buildings. They can then make their way up to the Acropolis, where the soft, warm light enhances the textures of the ruins.

Expert Commentary

As a weather specialist, Jim Dale, Founder and Senior Meteorologist at British Weather Services, explains the science behind what makes these locations so special:

"The richest light before the sun drops falls in the window between sunset and 'civil twilight'. Civil twilight is when the sun drops six degrees or less below the horizon. Depending on latitude and season, this light period can stretch to around two hours, though the very best moments usually come within a single hour. Broken cloud, of around three oktas or less, on the horizon can actually intensify the colours, while full cover or fog will ruin it. After that, you want minimal light pollution, light winds below 10mph and, ideally, a raised vantage point, which lowers the visible horizon and extends twilight. Fine, distant haze can deepen the reds and oranges as particles scatter the sun's light, but heavy dust or smoke will simply blot out the horizon. The locations that top these rankings provide such impressive golden hours as they are all vast, open expanses with an uninterrupted view of the horizon, with little or no artificial light."

The scoring framework was developed in partnership with Jim Dale, who has led British Weather Services, the UK's longest-established independent meteorological consultancy, since founding it in 1987.
