Riad Dar Zaouia, Angsana Heritage Collection

A house in the medina

An 11-room Marrakech house with a tree-filled courtyard, colourful interiors, and a rooftop above the medina

Dar Zaouia is part of Angsana’s collection of six historic riads spread through Marrakech’s medina, so the hotel extends beyond its own front door. Your room and breakfast are here, while the main restaurant is at Riad Si Said and the spa at Riad Bab Firdaus. Short walks through the surrounding lanes connect them, putting you straight back into Marrakech whenever you head out for dinner or a hammam.

Dar Zaouia itself centres on a leafy courtyard, where mature trees shade colonnaded arches and rose petals scatter across the fountain. The building has been both a religious school and a private mansion, and its 11 rooms retain that residential feel, with carved wooden ceilings, tiled floors, flashes of gold, and vivid azure bathrooms. Upstairs, turquoise latticework creates sunny and shaded corners on the private rooftop.

Why we love Riad Dar Zaouia, Angsana Heritage Collection

  • The courtyard is the heart of the house. Mature trees bring shade and birdsong, Berber rugs sit beneath the tables, and rose petals float around the fountain beneath the colonnaded arches.

  • Dar Zaouia has lived more than one life, first as a religious school and later as a private mansion. That residential history still shows in the carved wood ceilings, tiled floors, lamps, textiles, and individually styled rooms.

  • Colour turns up in unexpected places. Burnished-gold lamps and fittings punctuate the calmer bedrooms, while rich azure tiles make the bathrooms some of the most memorable spaces in the riad.

  • The rooftop gives you room to choose sun or shade, with turquoise lattice screens creating sheltered corners above the medina.

Depending on the season, breakfast is served either in the patio or up on the rooftop, with Moroccan pancakes, breads, homemade yoghurt, jams, and honey from local producers.

For lunch and dinner, Angsana’s restaurant is at Riad Si Said. The menu centres on Moroccan cooking, with Eastern Mediterranean influences alongside tagines, couscous, grilled fish, and seasonal dishes. Getting there means a short walk through the medina, making dinner feel a little more like going out than simply heading downstairs.

Breakfast at Dar Zaouia

For spa time, walk through the medina to Riad Bab Firdaus. Angsana Spa combines Moroccan rituals with Asian wellness traditions, with therapists trained through the Banyan Tree Spa Academy. Treatments include hammam rituals, massages, and therapies using ingredients such as black soap and argan oil. The spa is for guests aged 12 and over.

Across Angsana Heritage Collection, the riads preserve historic medina buildings and Moroccan craftsmanship while supporting local producers and communities. Eat for Good menus draw on produce from nearby growers and cooperatives, while Stay for Good supports education and water-resilience work in the High Atlas village of Sidi Fares.

Dar Zaouia has a dedicated Family Room as well as suites with more space, but there’s no kids’ club or swimming pool within the riad. It suits families who expect Marrakech itself to fill most of the day. Cots and extra beds can be requested in suitable suite categories, and babysitting is available with advance notice.
