Good Price for Private Pool Villa
I tend to stick to hotel chains to maximize elite benefits, but given that most chain hotels were closed in Koh Samui during covid, for a change I tried SALA Choengmon for this stay. My overall takeaway is that it’s a decent hotel which I would recommend hotel to occasional travelers, however it’s a notch below the luxury level of some international hotel chain properties where I stayed before on the island. Even though I was a first-time guest, upon check-in they were generous enough to give me an upgrade to the one-bedroom pool villa suite which was a nice gesture, possibly driven by the low occupancy during the virus outbreak. The main advantage of this room type is that it has its own pool and it’s very private because you are surrounded by high walls on every side. The total area is quite big at 176 square meters but most of it is outdoor space. Indoors it’s only 32 sq m which makes it quite a small suite; the bathroom is a further 10 sq m but it’s entirely outdoors. I don’t mind resorts where the shower is outside as it offers something different than standard city hotels, but I was less excited about having the toilet outdoors. During our stay the previous month in Ritz Carlton Koh Samui, we hardly saw any mosquitoes because the resort is set on a hill so it is not a suitable breeding ground for insects, however SALA is on flat terrain so we saw more mosquitoes than in RC, not so much during the day, but during the evening it was noticeable. Consequently going to the toilet during times of darkness was not the most convenient although the hotel provided mosquito coils to burn and repel the unfriendly bugs. The private pool is far more than a simple plunge pool offered by some hotels; it’s reasonably large 3m x 5m and it’s also deeper because I had water almost to my neck which is not typical of shallow hotel plunge pools. The outdoor arrangement was very nice, including a cabana for people who want to sit in the shadow and two lounge chairs in the sun, in addition to a dining table. At the end of the pool there are large wood panels which we kept closed for privacy, but we could see other people on the resort which opened them in order to have somewhat of a view. It is a good design feature to give guests the choice of more openness or more privacy. Inside the villa as mentioned above it was somewhat cramped so I was glad we had the upgrade; the extra space of the living room came in handy. The bedroom did not have much space on either side of the bed and when we wanted to access the bathroom we had go behind the bed and behind the small working desk which sat at the head of the bed. Overall it’s not a new construction and there was some wear and tear but nothing unusual and thankfully no carpets, so overall I was quite satisfied. Breakfast is often more disappointing in Samui hotels than other parts of Thailand, but in SALA it was good quality. We enjoyed having an extensive a la carte menu which is more luxury than a buffet and it contained both western and Asian dishes so it can keep everybody happy. Also they allowed guests to have their breakfast in the villa rather than in the restaurant at no extra charge (assuming you booked a rate with breakfast included) which is normally only a feature of luxury hotels. The restaurant itself was an inviting area right by the swimming pool and close enough to the beach that you have sea views from there. Service at the hotel was good throughout, from the pre-arrival e-mail exchange, also there are other service features of this hotel which give a more upscale experience for example in the pre-arrival questionnaire they give you a choice of pillow menu and you can also choose the scent of the soap you desire which is a nice touch. As mentioned above the swimming pool is very close to the beach so you can have nice views from there. The beach is a clean stretch of sand shared by a few hotels nearby. It might not be as good as Chaweng beach but it is a good alternative. Since the beach is located in a bay, the water was calm and water does not get deep unless you walk quite far so it is a reasonably good beach for children. Overall I was happy with our stay and I can recommend this property. Somehow it is unfair to expect this property to match loyalty benefits of big hotel chains, but in the niche they occupy in Koh Samui it can be a good choice. The price we paid was excellent considering we had a villa with a pool as private as it was.
Truly 5 star hotel
Everything everyone else has said is true. The hotel is beautiful, the staff are incredible and the setting is stunning. Best breakfast I've ever had, french toast 👌. Enjoyed lazing in our pool villa, swimming in the sea and relaxing by the beach with cocktails during happy hour. Big thanks to the staff for their compassion and understanding when a family bereavement impacted our travel plans. We look forward to returning when the world opens up to travel again. Thanks to the entire wonderful team.
Holiday 2020 Mr Gannon
This is our 3rd visit to this little slice off paradise. And to start with our review, we must apologise for not putting a wee comment up before now. This resort is totally amazing. Check in flawless...after a long journey a wee soothing wet cloth and a wee drink...bliss. We stayed in a garden pool villa....stunning....spotless....luxurious....Breakfast to die for, staff amazing. We were lucky enough to be invited to a cocktail party, and it was truly wonderful, Dick (the General Manager) is a true gentleman, and Nana who made us laugh so much was a joy. But we have to say our favourite was the beach boys, they were spectacular, looking after us very well indeed, we cannot pass our thanks in words, because there are none. Especially at such a difficult time globally. We had our flights home cancelled and had to ask to stay an extra 2 nights before we could fly home, not a problem to the team at Sala, not even a need to change room, and we are most grateful for you help at a time that was bit stressful for us. Our only regret......we had to come home. Thank you so much for a wonderful, relaxing, amazing holiday.
Perfect spot to relax, with delicious food
I spent four nights here in early March and can't recommend Sala Samui more highly. March offered exceptional weather. It was hot and sunny each day and the sunset period was especially nice to walk along the beach at Choeng Mon. The breakfast was outstanding! As well as having diverse a la carte dishes and fresh vegetable and fruit juices to order, the buffet offered lots of fresh options like salads, an egg station, breads, pastries and yoghurts and cereals, as well as popular treats, such as ice cream, especially for younger guests. Lunch and dinner was also delicious, for both Thai and Western food, with plenty of choice and available all day. The Thai Night, on Thursdays was the best I have experienced. Not only was a lot of the buffet meal. interactive, with chef's cooking different dishes to order and preference for guests, the fire show on the beach was a great show, and the price was reasonable. What really stood out to me during my stay here was the wonderful friendly team of staff that took such amazing care of me. I noticed how excited return guests were to see staff from their prior visits, and in turn how wonderfully welcome staff made new and return guests feel, especially during mealtimes at the restaurant. There are two main swimming pools by the beachfront, with plenty of sun-beds and big double sun loungers to relax around these and on the beach. Service here was also excellent for food and drinks, such as fresh coconuts - a Samui specialty. Many rooms also have their own pools. The villas are definitely the rooms to go for where possible, offering private pools and plenty of space. The deluxe balcony rooms are good value and the large covered balcony with day bed and garden view adds extra space. It was clear staying here that management and staff genuinely really cared for their guests. It was a stressful time to be travelling away from home for most guests, yet they all felt safe and very indulged with exceptional personal care from the Sala team. The reduced price massages by the pool for happy hour were a great option too. Thanks again for a wonderful stay, it was so nice to see everyone so happy with their choice of holidaying on Samui with you.
This is what the perfect paradise holiday looks like!
As what any other videography couple would do, we made a video about this wonderful hotel. We can't share the link with you on here though because sadly, TripAdvisor does not allow URL's to be posted on reviews yet (come on TripAdvisor!!), so if you want to see the video, search for Sarah Marriott on YouTube. Koh Samui - You are reading this because you are probably planning a trip/holiday to Koh Samui right? Checking out all the different hotels and what's on offer right? Do they have amenities to suit your needs? Looking for a hotel with all the bells and whistles and the most amazing staff? In our opinion, this hotel has it all, and then some! Sala - This hotel has all of the internal luxuries that you can expect from a 5-star hotel and it is surrounded by tall palm trees, sounds of the ocean and calm, relaxing beaches. Dick (the GM) and his team have definitely invested the right amount of time, training and skills to ensure that the entire staff (reservations, bar, concierge, drivers, waitresses, security, room service, chefs, duty managers etc) all make you feel like you are the centre of your own holiday. No request is ever too much to ask from any of the crew, and they will gladly go out of their way to make your stay that much more pleasant. The grounds are spotlessly clean, the villas are exclusively private and the added overall features are a warm and inviting touch, just how a 5-star hotel should be! The hotel has a few food options, both inside the hotel and just outside the hotel. The food is yummy, the prices are a little on the higher end of the scale, but overall, it is the perfect hotel if you are looking to relax, unwind, and experience true paradise. They have their own app which updates you on their evening events (fire shows, Thai dance evenings, movies on the beach etc), most of which are complementary to guests. You can even order room service or book a few external adventure tours (trusted and recommended by the hotel) directly from the app too! In the room - You get to choose your own bath lotions and pillow types, the flat screen tv's offer a multiple of channels, including English channels, with movies and regular TV shows, the private pool (in the villas) are large and always at the perfect temperature, the aircon and internet are fast-acting, the beds are super comfy and the outdoor bathtubs/showers is a 'feeling free' touch. Smart TV's would be a recommendation (for streaming Netflix), although, I guess when on a paradise holiday, watching TV is probably low on the 'to do' list. The resort - has many other features such as a three storey gym, a board room for meetings, a library, morning yoga classes, a massage palace, a gift shop, free entertainment shows (usually accompanied before/after dinner), 2 swimming pools, a bar, a beach side restaurant, day beds, some water sport supplies and so many other features. The staff - Every single staff member is there to make you and your family feel like you are the only people staying at the hotel. They are attentive, most of them speak English (in fact I think Dick, their General Manager is fluent in like 7 or 8 languages), but they are all so lovely and welcoming. A special shout out to Amanda (Duty Manager) who was absolutely outstanding in making sure our every request was met (we had a few!), as well as Nim and the reservation/concierge ladies, were always so friendly and ready to help with our holiday needs. CONS - Every hotel is always going to have features that some people love and some that don't. We only had one feature which we didn't like and that was the higher than usual prices of the food. The food was tasty and the flavours were authentic, but considering when you can spend 90% less at local restaurants, prices of food were exceptionally high in this regard. As an example, the first day that we arrived was about 7 am, way before the due check-in time. We opted to sit by the pool for a bit and have breakfast. Our package included breakfast each morning, although this only started from the following morning, onwards. Coming off a 24-hour flight, we were tired and hungry so we made the decision to just get some breakfast. We ordered some coffees and had bacon and eggs, and some fruit and our bill came to AU$136. For dinner, some of them came with a show of some kind, and prices averaged between AU$60-90 per person. This is not a bad reflection on the hotel, this is just our personal opinion. If you really are looking for a pure getaway escape which is peaceful, beautiful and memorable (and is also child-friendly), this hotel would be perfect for that!
