hotel on a mountain (big hill)
Good Points: nice staff, food generally ok with no problems. Very clean rooms and all areas cleaned regularly. Gardens very nicely kept. Nice Thursday night BBQ and entertainment at the pool. Comfortable beds. Good breakfast dont go late or there will be nothing left. Improvement Points: The booking process should say wearing mask compulsory, consistent rule on where you have to wear mask, for example telling me I had to wear a mask at the pool bar but not anyone else in the queue. Do not complain because some take that personally and it seemed some acted against us after I complained. Self service pool bar need vastly improving only one small fridge and soft drinks all warm. No mixers in the auto tap and very rarely serviced, had to ask for replacement drinks. Mixers via tap (coke and the like) awful taste and some nights I just drank water. The reggae DJ was awful and managed to clear the room by 10pm, some of the singers set were dreary and lacked any personality, song after song same tone so we left. Roof bar terrace not used properly should have the late night feeling, not just the TV or background music. Consistent dress code for al la carte where when and not what should be acceptable. Not saying don’t like that shirt or those shorts, when the night before the same shirt different colour was acceptable. Food at the al la carte is only ok, sent mine back three times on separate nights. Food in the restaurant is strange had roast beef but had to have Bombay potato and salad, nothing else available! Mosquitoes a problem they ignor the jungle spray and bite you anyway. The Island is very poor and it shows you would not want to walk down to the town as a tourist, have to use the bus or taxi. There was a shooting in the town on the second week. we were ok in the hotel.
Not bad but…
Let me first start off with the positive. The staff here is nice and wonderful and extremely friendly. They will assist with most of your needs. There adhere to the Covid process process extremely well which I appreciated. At check in it was very pleasant but a tad old school. They make you fill out a ton of paperwork whereas in a regular hotel you hand over your credit card and get the key to your room. No biggie just a different process. Now for the room situation which leads me to some of the negatives. I traveled with my sister and we each got separate rooms.I made the reservations for both rooms… each with 2 double beds. However we got distinctly different rooms. My sister gets the room with the huge king size bed and even bigger bathroom with double sinks and shower. Meanwhile I got a good sized room but the bathroom situation left a lot to be desired. The shower was extremely tight. It was literally a capsule with two rounded doors. Almost like the showers on a cruise ship. If you book this hotel request a room NOT in the main building. I did ask for a room change and they first said all the rooms have the same showers which is absurd. Secondly they said they really didn’t have anything available but oceanfront which would incur an up charge. I just decided to deal with it even tho disappointed. Secondly they didn’t have any soap..apparently ran out. Which is another thing I found a little absurd. They suggested we use the shower gel provided. As for the food… it was good in parts. We had the buffet for mostly breakfast and dinner and they had a pretty good variety and it was fresh. Was able to enjoy a few authentic dishes of the island. We loved Lulus for lunch which was by the pool area and stuck to that for lunch. The only thing about this resort when it comes to eating anywhere it’s that it’s mostly an open air resort which is good and bad. The bad is that at times you can’t eat peacefully because the birds are around all the time disturbing you and often grabbing food from your plate. The resort had an indoor restaurant with about a few tables that you needed to make reservations for. One day we went and they gave my sister a hard time because she had on a T-shirt. My sister doesn’t dress up at all but she looked extremely neat with black slacks and shoes. I think this was bit disappointing given the fact that when people are on vacation they wanna relax. I get if people were going in with beachwear and flip flops but this was a little overboard. The DJ in the evening was pretty excellent actually….had great energy and music every evening. The good thing about this resort is that overall it’s quiet here and love that it’s adults only. They have a convenient shuttle service to and from the beach and to the Castries market for souvenirs etc. I might consider coming back here but they really should think of renovating the showers.
The Bel jou is marketed as a quiet, romantic hotel this is laughable. On the positive side the every day staff are fantastic. We stayed at the hotel in May the first few days were peaceful then a large group checked in of approx 40 they were loud rude and disrespectful the management did little to alleviate a bad situation. Eventually this large group left followed by a group of sports people who were no better, this ruined our holiday.
Not one for the discerning traveller
We have just returned home having checked out early as it wasn’t for us. An airbrush on photos can do wonders we feel. To start with the good things , the majority of staff are friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Breakfast was the best meal of the day . Lovely ice cream at Lulu’s. For us the downside was the poor standard of our room, along with the rest of the hotel which is tired , the mattresses had seen better days, we struggled to sleep, and the bathroom was particularly poor. Much was broken and didn’t work. The beach towels were worn and almost transparent, Ms. Polizzi (TV’s Hotel Inspector) would have a field day ! Mosquitoes are a problem, the hotel try their best with a weekly fog resulting in a sickly and all pervading smell of deet all the time. At nightfall the tree frogs make a continuous racket which can be heard in most parts of the hotel including our room , you can’t help nature because the hotel’s grounds are their home, however you can’t get away from the noise. The surrounding area is extremely poor and would have been dangerous to walk out of the complex as non locals. The beach shuttle operated on a limited basis. In our view the hotel falls short of its ‘TTTT’ rating and our experience didn’t match up to what we had expected, hence our premature departure. We left 3 days after arrival ,, simply couldn’t stand the place - we could use many detrimental adjectives about this place . Takes all sorts we guess and it wasn’t for us,
Wonderful relaxing stay with great customer service
Transfer time approx 80 mins. Upon arrival we had a warm greeting and had our temperatures taken by one of the nurses, which is repeated every morning before breakfast (current Covid measures here. Also mask wearing is required inside the building and restaurant when choosing your food) There was a tourist tax to pay which we were unaware of, but it isn’t too expensive at 3 US dollars per adult per night payable on arrival. The staff were wonderful and are a real asset to this hotel. They are the friendliest, most attentive and helpful staff we’ve come across whilst on holiday. The hotel is situated on a hill, with wonderful views of the sea and town. However, we did feel this was also a negative at times, as it meant there was no where near by to have a casual walk to e.g. after dinner, unless you wanted to walk into town. But then you would need to walk back up the very very steep hills! There is a free shuttle to the beach or town (except Wed & Sun) which is very handy, but without this we felt a little stranded at times. The beach was also lovely, very quiet and definitely worth a visit. The food was very good, as was the offering from the a la carte restaurant which you can book into in advance. Whilst the food was good, if you are a fussy eater there may be evenings which you would struggle with, as there wasn’t a massive offering of choice. The bar at the top pool serve lovely bar snacks (burgers and chips, tachos, hot dog etc) which were tasty, although the service isn’t the quickest, with the average wait around 30-40 mins. The rooms were clean and the air con worked well, as did the free wifi throughout the hotel. There isn’t a fridge in the room, but you can ask for one at reception and they will put one in your room. The entertainment was ok and comes down to personal taste. There is a roof top bar which opens at 7pm with snacks from 9pm. We loved this space, which has great views, but felt it was under utilised. It would be ideal with some better lighting and some alternative low key music, such as some chill out music to provide a different option for evening space to relax in. To summarise, this hotel was great for a relaxing time away in beautiful surroundings, with great customer service. However if returning to St Lucia we would look to stay closer to the beach to not have to rely on transport to move around. Thank you Bel Jou for a fantastic stay!
