Central Thailand Explorer

Embark on a journey through central Thailand on this 9-night cultural journey from Bangkok to Hua Hin

This is Thailand without the airport hopping, focusing on central Thailand and everything it has to offer. You’ll start in Bangkok for street food, temples, markets, and big-city energy, then head west to Kanchanaburi for the River Kwai, wartime history, and waterfall country, before finishing on the coast in Hua Hin, Thailand’s original seaside escape. The route works because each stop does something different, and the travel in between earns its place. We keep it smooth with private transfers, a choice of sightseeing stops between Kanchanaburi and Hua Hin, and the right mix of guided experiences and time to do your own thing.

Days 1-3

Bangkok

Use these days to get under the city’s skin without turning sightseeing into a competitive sport. It helps to choose a few guided experiences. Add Bangkok by night in an electric tuk-tuk for illuminated landmarks and proper local snacks, or explore by bike for quieter backstreets as well as headline sights. Floating markets and Bangkok Your Way half-day or full-day tours can also be added, depending on whether you want temples, food, markets, or a bit of everything.

Bangkok By Night
Bangkok

Bangkok is a city that never sleeps, and while its nightlife is legendary, many of its most beautiful sights are often overlooked after dark. In the evening, temperatures drop and there's less traffic, so it's an ideal time to discover a different side of Bangkok. Travel by tuk tuk to discover speakeasy bars, illuminated temples, and mouthwatering street food.

Your journey begins at Sathorn (Saphan Taksin) Pier at 6.30pm, where you’ll meet your guide and set off on a short tuk tuk ride into Chinatown. Here, tucked away in narrow alleys, you’ll find a stylish speakeasy bar where a delicious local meal and a herb-infused cocktail await. From there, explore iconic landmarks that most visitors only see by day. Pass the Grand Palace, glowing majestically against the night sky and stroll through the serene grounds of a nearby temple–a tranquil experience that feels worlds apart from the daytime bustle.

Next, dive into Bangkok’s famous street food scene. The nighttime streets come alive with sizzling woks and fragrant aromas, and you’ll sample some of the city’s best dishes, including sweet treats from beloved dessert stalls, such as kluai thot– deliciously sticky pieces of deep-fried banana coated in sesame seeds - the perfect way to round off the evening.

Throughout the evening, tuk tuks whisk you between stops, adding a dash of adventure to the experience. The tour concludes around 10.30pm, either at Bangkok’s most colourful and lively night walking street or at Sam Yot MRT Station, depending on your preference.

• Duration: evening
• Time: 6.30pm to 10.30pm

Good to know
The tour is not suitable for children under 10. It can get surprisingly cool zipping around at night in an open-sided vehicle, so you’ll be grateful for the extra coverage. Transfers to departure point not included.

Discover The Real Bangkok by Bike
Bangkok

Get off the beaten track with a leisurely tour on two wheels through some of Bangkok’s most beguiling areas. After meeting up with your guide and collecting your bike, you’ll head into the heart of Yaowarat, the city’s vibrant Chinatown district. You’ll pedal through winding lanes lined with shops and stalls selling everything from Buddhist amulets to authentic street food, with a few stops along the way to buy and try. From here, you’ll cross the Chao Phraya river by ferry to Thonburi, once the capital of Thailand and now a relatively sleepy residential district.

You’ll pass tiny shrines and temples, narrow waterways, quaint little markets and people just going about their business - it’s not nicknamed “the living part of Bangkok” for nothing - before returning to your starting point.

• Half day

• Timings: 8am to 11am or 2pm to 5pm

• Daily departures

• Operates year round

• Group experience

Good to know
The tour is unsuitable for children under 12, but perfect for families with energetic teenagers. Bike and helmet rental is included, but transfers to/from your hotel are not.

Bangkok’s Floating Market
Bangkok

One of Bangkok’s more colourful attractions, Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is rightly on many visitors’ not-to-be-missed lists. Heading out in the cool of the early morning, you’ll stop at iconic Wat Bang Kung, an ancient temple almost completely surrounded by the roots of a vast banyan tree, to soak up its unique atmosphere and learn about its not-always-peaceful history. From here, you’ll carry on to the floating market itself, which occupies a maze of narrow canals (khlongs) crowded with narrow wooden sampans piled high with produce.

You’ll venture out on the water in your own boat, where you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take some superb photos and bargain for typical snacks. Your final destination is the extraordinary Rom Hub Railway Market, whose stalls lie on either side of an active railway track, meaning that the vendors have to pull everything out of the way every time a train goes past - which is quite a sight!\

Bangkok Your Way (Private Driver and Guide) - Half Day or Full Day
Bangkok

Whether you know precisely what you want to see or are looking for some suggestions from someone who knows the city like the back of their hand, there’s no better way of exploring Bangkok at your own pace than with a private guide and chauffeur. With the help of their insider tips, you’ll be able to get unique insights into the city’s most famous sights, discover hidden gems you’d never have stumbled upon on your own and learn about the country’s culture along the way.

With stops wherever and whenever you want, and the ability to change course on a whim, it’s a superb option for those travelling with children and those who want a tailor-made immersion in the history and culture of Bangkok.

• Duration: half day or full day
• Daily departures
• Operates year round
• Private experience

Good to know
You’ll have to pay locally for parking fees and tickets to any attractions you visit, and for any refreshments.

Days 4-5

Kanchanaburi

A driver will take you west to Kanchanaburi, where Thailand transitions from a full-volume city to riverside calm. Kanchanaburi is beautiful, but it carries serious history. The Bridge on the River Kwai, war cemeteries, museums, and the Death Railway tell the story of the prisoners of war and Asian labourers who suffered here during the Second World War. We’ve included the Death Railway experience here, not as a box-tick, but because it gives important context to the landscape you’re travelling through. Nearby Erawan National Park brings the natural wow, with tiered waterfalls and blue-green pools.

Day 6

Sightseeing journey to Hua Hin

Today, the journey earns its keep. Rather than going straight from Kanchanaburi to Hua Hin, we’ll build in a sightseeing stop that suits you. Choose Damnoen Saduak Floating Market for canal colour and longtail boats, Maeklong Railway Market for the famous train-through-the-market moment, or Phetchaburi’s Khao Wang Summer Palace for hilltop views, royal history, and Thai architecture. It’s a clever way to break up the route and see something you might otherwise miss.

Sightseeing transfer - Kanchanaburi to Hua Hin
Kanchanaburi

As you travel between your Kanchanaburi city hotel and Hua Hin (or vice versa) you can save valuable holiday time by stopping at some of Thailand’s popular attractions along the way. Watch the market traders at Damnoen Saduak Floating Market where they jostle for position to sell their produce from their boats or see how quickly the stall holders at Rom Hub Market lift their products as a train squeezes through the track-lined stalls. Alternatively, you can make a stop at Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park at Phetchaburi, famous for its 40-metre high pagoda overlooking the city. Travel is in an air-conditioned vehicle.

Good to know

  • Entrance fees, drinks and meals are not included
  • Sightseeing is unescorted and your driver will remain with the vehicle for up to 2 hours whilst you explore
  • Sightseeing pick up and drop off will be at the same location
  • Supplements apply for more than one stop or for hotels outside of the Kanchanaburi city area
  • If visiting Rom Hub Market, check train times in advance
Days 7-10

Hua Hin

Arrive in Hua Hin, a seaside town long loved by Thai royalty and still known for its grown-up, easygoing charm. Expect seafood restaurants, night markets, golf, cultural day trips and beach time rather than party-island pandemonium. We’d recommend adding a tour or two to really get to grips with what Hua Hin is all about. The Hua Hin Highlights Tour is a good start, taking in the heritage railway station, Khao Hin Lek Fai viewpoint, Hua Hin Artist Village, Wat Huay Mongkol and a wine tasting at Monsoon Valley Vineyard. For a fuller cultural day, head to Phetchaburi to visit King Rama IV’s hilltop summer palace, royal temples and the atmospheric Khao Luang Cave.

Jungle Waterfall Trek
Hua Hin

Embark on an exciting journey through pineapple plantations and trek to Pala-U Waterfall, located in the jungle of the Kaeng Krachan National Park near the Myanmar border. The waterfall has 14 different tiers, and you can either take a stroll to the third station or climb to the top for a more challenging experience. Later, you’ll stop at the Wat Huay Mongkul temple, famous for its colossal 12-meter statue of one of Thailand's most renowned monks, Luang Pu Thuat.
