Mekong Navigator - Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City

Drift from southern Vietnam to Phnom Penh on a four-night Mekong River cruise shaped by village stops, river islands, and Delta life.

This four-night upstream cruise is a brilliant way to connect southern Vietnam with Cambodia without making the border crossing feel like a travel admin day. You begin near Ho Chi Minh City, boarding at My Tho, then follow the Mekong through canals, market towns, farming villages, and quiet islands before arriving in Phnom Penh. The Mekong Navigator makes the short cruise feel comfortable rather than compact. Between excursions, there’s a sun deck for watching river life drift past, a restaurant serving regional dishes and western alternatives, a lounge and bar, a library, and a spa and fitness centre.

Day 1

Phnom Penh

You board in Phnom Penh in the late morning, have lunch on board, and still have the afternoon free for a last look at the city before sailing south. Back on the ship, the first evening brings local culture straight to the sun deck, with children performing Apsara, Cambodia’s classical dance, along with traditional folk dances before dinner. You get time to settle into your suite, find your favourite spot on deck, and let the ship become home for the next four nights.

Day 2

Sailing to the border

This is the cruise’s slowest day, giving you time to properly settle in. As the ship heads downstream towards the Cambodia-Vietnam border, you can get a better feel for life on board: breakfast at your own pace, time on the sun deck, a flick through a book in the library, or a spa treatment. Cultural activities give the day some shape, with tropical fruit tasting, a Vietnamese spring roll demonstration, and an introduction to traditional Cambodian clothing.

Day 3

Gieng Island and My An Hung

Your first full day in Vietnam offers two distinct sides of Delta life. On Gieng Island, also known as Mango Island, you travel by sampan and motorised rickshaw to visit a boat-building yard, an incense workshop, a Catholic church, and a family home with mango from the farm. After lunch on board, My An Hung gives the afternoon a quieter village feel, with fresh coconut, honey tea, fruit, local music, and a Vovinam martial arts performance by village teenagers.

Day 4

Sa Dec and Cai Be

Sa Dec brings you into one of the Delta’s old trading towns, where river routes still feed into markets, workshops, temples, and family homes. You visit Kien An Cung, a colourful Chinese temple that reflects the area’s Chinese-Vietnamese heritage, then continue through the market, where daily trade makes the town feel properly alive. Cai Be shifts the focus back to the water, with rowing boats taking you through narrow, palm-shaded canals and a cottage factory that shows how rice is made into rice paper, rice wine, and popped rice. By late afternoon, you’re back on board for the sunset cruise towards My Tho Marina, followed by a farewell reception and Vietnamese dinner in the dining room.

Day 5

My Tho to Ho Chi Minh City

After breakfast, you disembark at My Tho and transfer to Ho Chi Minh City. It’s a satisfying way to arrive in southern Vietnam because you’ve followed the river into the Delta first, rather than landing straight into the city with no sense of what surrounds it. This downstream route works especially well if your wider trip starts in Cambodia and continues into Vietnam, turning the space between Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City into part of the holiday.
