Mekong Navigator - Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh

Drift from southern Vietnam to Phnom Penh on a four-night Mekong cruise shaped by village stops, river islands and Delta life.

This four-night upstream cruise is a brilliant way to connect southern Vietnam with Cambodia without making the border crossing feel like a travel admin day. You begin near Ho Chi Minh City, boarding at My Tho, then follow the Mekong through canals, market towns, farming villages and quiet islands before arriving in Phnom Penh. The Mekong Navigator makes the short cruise feel comfortable rather than compact. Between excursions, there’s a sun deck for watching river life drift past, a restaurant serving regional dishes and western alternatives, a lounge and bar, a library, and a spa and fitness centre.

Day 1

Ho Chi Minh to My Tho

The trip begins at My Tho, one of the key gateways to the Mekong Delta. This is where the city starts to loosen its grip, and the river takes over, with waterways, fruit orchards, low houses, and boats loaded with everyday cargo. You board in the afternoon, settle into your cabin, and get your first look at life on the water. The first evening is leisurely. There’s a welcome reception, a safety briefing, and dinner on board, so you can get your bearings without rushing into sightseeing straight away. It’s the ideal first night if you’re coming from a busy city stay.

Day 2

Cai Be and Sa Dec

Cai Be gives you the Mekong Delta most people hope to see, with narrow canals, rowing boats, water palms, cottage industries, and local workshops producing rice paper and rice wine. You’ll leave the ship to explore by sampan, which is exactly the right scale for this part of the river. Big boats show you the Mekong from a distance while sampans – rowed by guides in iconic conical hats – get you into the smaller waterways to bring the houses, temples, and daily routines much closer. Later, you continue towards Sa Dec, a historic town with a very different feel. The market adds colour and noise with its fresh produce, fish, seafood, and busy local trade.

Day 3

My An Hung and Gieng Island

My An Hung brings your voyage into village life. You head ashore by sampan and walk through a farming village, with time to try fresh coconut, honey tea, and fruit. There’s also a Vovinam martial arts performance by village teenagers, which gives the stop a more personal feel. The sampans take you to Gieng Island next. Fondly known as Mango Island, it sits along the upper Mekong and is known for farming, boat building, and a quieter way of life. The visit usually combines sampan travel with motorised rickshaw, which helps you cover more ground. Stops may include a boat-building yard, an incense workshop, a Catholic church, and an old Vietnamese house with mango from the family farm as a delicious bonus.

Day 4

Sailing upstream and border crossing

This is the day to let the ship do more of the work. As the cruise continues upstream towards Cambodia, you have time to watch the river change from the deck rather than heading out on another excursion. It’s a relaxing pause in a short itinerary, especially after two days of villages, markets, canals, and island stops. On board, the day is still nicely filled. Cultural activities may include tropical fruit tasting, a Vietnamese spring roll demonstration, and an introduction to traditional Cambodian costumes. In the evening, the captain’s cocktail and sabering moment adds a little theatre before dinner.

Day 5

Phnom Penh

After breakfast, you disembark in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital. It’s a satisfying endpoint because the cruise has brought you there gradually, through the Delta’s canals, villages, markets, and islands. From here, your trip can continue into Phnom Penh, on to Angkor, or further through Cambodia.
