Hotel Suisse has overlooked Kandy Lake since 1890. The grounds once hosted the King's buffaloes. Lord Mountbatten later ran wartime operations from here. Now you can order a pizza and slip into the pool.
Hotel Suisse has a formidable CV. Built as a grand residence, it's welcomed guests since 1890, served as Lord Mountbatten's wartime headquarters during the Second World War and even operated as a maternity ward.
Inside, nobody has panicked and painted everything greige. It’s proudly old-school: soaring ceilings, warm wood and cane-backed chairs. Book a Vintage Room for a balcony and glimpses of Kandy Lake. Downstairs does dinner, drinks, pizza and a spa. Outside, there are palms and a pool. Exactly what’s needed after Kandy’s temples, traffic and tropical heat.
Why we love Hotel Suisse
-
Upgrade the stay with private dining in Lord Mountbatten’s Wine Cellar. Fine wines and a setting that's seen more history than most restaurants.
-
Finish breakfast and walk straight into central Kandy. The lake is opposite. The Temple of the Tooth and Royal Palace wait along its northern edge.
-
Walk beside Kandy Lake and the city puts on a miniature safari. Birds overhead, turtles and fish below and Asian water monitors turning an ordinary stroll into something wild.
-
The essential Kandy detour? Peradeniya’s Royal Botanic Gardens, roughly 20 minutes away by car. Think impeccable orchids and huge trees.
Rooms
High ceilings and period details reflect the building's heritage, while air conditioning, Wi-Fi and contemporary bathrooms bring things firmly into the present. Heritage Rooms start at 18m², while Vintage Rooms are the most spacious and may feature lake-view balconies.
Facilities
Five options cover everything from breakfast and Sri Lankan dishes to cocktails and wood-fired pizza. One minute Lord Mountbatten; the next, mozzarella.
Mountbatten Restaurant
The main restaurant serves breakfast alongside seasonal Sri Lankan and international dishes.
Kings Lounge
A lounge bar serving gastro-pub-style plates, cocktails and mocktails.
Pool Bar
Light bites and cold drinks beside the outdoor swimming pool.
Mountbatten Courtyard and Wine Cellar
A restored wine cellar and courtyard provide the hotel’s more cosy dinner setting. Think historic walls and low lighting.
Suisse Pizzeria
Wood-fired pizzas from Italian combinations to toppings with a Sri Lankan accent. Great after a day of sightseeing.
