A relaxed riverfront camp on a bend of the Mara River, with hippos and crocodiles close by, the Maasai Mara within easy reach, and the kind of value that makes a Kenya safari feel possible without losing the magic.
Exploreans Mara River Camp is a lovely way into the Maasai Mara if you want the wildlife drama without a huge lodge feel. The camp sits on a bend of the Mara River at the foot of the Oloololo Escarpment, around 15 minutes from Kichwa Tembo Airstrip, with 23 tents. The river is the star: hippos surface nearby, crocodiles patrol the banks, and elephants and giraffes can move through the surrounding grounds, so you don’t have to wait for the game drive to feel like you’re on safari. Days can be shaped around early drives, full-day outings with lunch under acacia trees, pool time, sundowners, and dinner under the stars. During migration season, the camp is close to several major river crossing points, but the herds run to their own schedule, naturally.
Why we love Exploreans Mara River Camp
-
The riverfront setting gives you plenty to watch between game drives, from hippos in the water to birds along the banks and wildlife passing through the camp area. Even the swimming pool feels part of the safari experience, tucked beneath the trees where you might spot zebras or mongooses passing by while you cool off.
-
It’s close to Kichwa Tembo Airstrip, so its bags down, binoculars up soon after you land
-
The camp works well for Great Wildebeest Migration trips, with major river crossing points nearby between July and October. Crossings are spectacular, but never guaranteed
-
Families will appreciate the spacious Bush Tents, which offer extra room to relax while keeping the authentic safari-camp feel
Rooms
River Tents sit on the river’s edge, with terraces made for coffee, birdsong, and hippo-spotting. Bush Tents are larger and set deeper into the bush, with more space and views towards the savannah.
Facilities
Breakfast can be light and early before a game drive, lunch can happen under the trees, and dinner moves into that wonderful safari zone of open air, low light, and “was that a hippo?” in the distance. You won’t find endless venues to decode, but you will get meals that feel rooted in the setting, with local, Asian, and international flavours served in the garden, on the deck, or out in the bush.
Main Restaurant
The main dining spot, serving local, Asian, and international flavours in the garden, on the deck, or out in the bush, depending on the day’s plan.
Zebra Bar
The easy poolside-by-day, bonfire-by-evening bar for snacks, cocktails, and a golden-hour drink before dinner.
Bush Dining
Bush breakfasts, lunches under acacia trees, and sundowner cocktails bring the meal closer to the landscape.
What's Included
• Breakfast, lunch and dinner • Game drives • Park fees
This place suits families who want the Mara experience in a small, good-value river camp rather than a large lodge. Bush Tents sleep up to four guests, and the river setting gives children plenty to watch before and after game drives, from hippos in the water to wildlife moving through the surrounding grounds.
