Amazing views of animals from the dining room and rooms!
Amazing lodge in the Tsavo West! National park. Our room and meals overlooked a watering hole- amazing to watch the elephants, water Buffalo, warthogs, ostriches and more to come by for a drink. The staff were incredible- special shout-out to Isaac and Liliane. Also the staff turns down your beds and put the mosquito net out while we were on Safari. A really special place! Highly recommend!
My family and I had a wonderful experience at the lodge. The watering whole was fantastic and provided incredible scenes of elephants, buffalo and zebra coming to hydrate. Everything from the room to the food was superb, and we are very grateful to our tour guide Stephen who took us on two wonderful game drives and an in incredible hike. We are definitely hoping to visit again and would recommend this lodge to anyone looking for a once in a lifetime bush safari experience.
how does this watering hole not make "best in Africa" lists?
I have stayed at many of the Serena properties, and this is my favorite. I have stayed in many accommodations in parks not just across Kenya, but the entire continent, and the watering hole here rivals any I have seen (including ones I see on travel blog top 10's). The room was elegant and comfortable, but in hindsight, all that needs to be commented upon is the amazing watering hole. We saw more there than in the rest of the time in the park. Even a tussle between a leopard and some zebra (the zebra ran off the leopard eventually which was interesting to see). It's a worthwhile park to visit, and I cannot imagine a better place to stay. If I could do it again, I would do a short morning game drive and include the springs and the tank, and do the evening ride to the rhino sanctuary, but spend the rest of the time just sitting at the watering hole soaking up the sights (they should put a 5 minute time lapse photo gallery of 24 hours up and you would see what I mean). I have found that the accommodations and level of comfort are consistent from one Serena property to another. Food here was buffet which is on par with other properties. Staff were very friendly, and I had an amazing massage. Truly amazing, and worth the 90 minutes I was away from the fascinating happenings at the watering hole. I was only here one night, but strongly considering spending several days at this property on my next trip to East Africa.
Incredible watering hole!
The watering hole at this lodge is incredible! From the restaurant/bar, you get beautiful mountain views and an endless parade of animals. At breakfast and dinner, we were treated to several different elephant herds at the watering hole, some pesky hyenas, zebras, giraffes, water buffalo, and the list goes on... There's no need to leave the lodge to go on safari! The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was buffet style and very good with a large selection to choose from. The rooms were a bit dated but still functional and comfortable.
An old classic, not to be missed
Kilaguni has an air of history about it. It is the second oldest lodge in Tsavo and it retains its 1960s feel but it has been modernized. Don't look for present-day glitz and glamor. Instead, you will enjoy the treat of a well-established place with mature gardens, and the more traditional safari lodge decor. The rooms all face the same way, overlooking the plains and hills, and the waterhole that is right in front of the long veranda and dining room. The veranda is a special feature of the lodge, you can sit and watch the wildlife come to the waterhole day and night. The service is excellent; the staff are friendly. The pool is old but still ok to enjoy. There is a really well-stocked gift shop and a nice bar, and an alcove with historical photos showing the early days of the lodge. The rooms have large bathrooms (no tub, just a shower), balconies, and comfortable spacious sleeping area. The room was very hot when we stayed there, and opening the door to help the ceiling fan was not an option, given monkeys and other wildlife at close hand. This is a peaceful place, well situated to be a base for exploring Tsavo West, or to stay here en route to Amboseli or Tsavo East.
