The world's best destinations for golden hour

Golden hour is nature’s best filter. Desert dunes burn copper, limestone cliffs sharpen into silhouette and glassy lagoons soften from sparkle to sheen. But where in the world gives you the best chance of catching golden hour at its finest?

We’ve put destinations around the world to the test, looking at the conditions that can make or break those last sun-soaked moments of the day. Cloud cover, rainfall, light pollution, artificial brightness, windspeed and average sunset duration were all factored into a final Golden Hour Score.

The result? Deserts take the top spots, Africa features prominently and Europe adds several favourites to the ranking. But our experts have a few contenders of their own. We asked our well-travelled team to share the sunset spots they’d happily return to.

Where sunset hits different

The data has a definite eye for drama. Jordan's Wadi Rum tops the table, with a string of Kuoni favourites following close behind.

Africa owns golden hour

If there’s one region that runs away with the results, it’s Africa. Seven destinations make the global top 20, including three in Namibia alone.

Sossusvlei, Namibia, ranks second in the world, with a Golden Hour Score of 94.93. Towering dunes, salt pans and camel-thorn trees give the low sun plenty to work with. Damaraland follows in third place, while Etosha National Park comes in sixth.

Botswana lands two spots of its own. The Okavango Delta ranks seventh and the Chobe River thirteenth, where the last light often comes with wildlife in frame. This is golden hour with elephants at the water’s edge, mokoros sliding through reed-lined channels and safari boats cruising beneath wide-open skies.

Further east, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe takes eleventh place, while nearby Livingstone in Zambia ranks eighteenth.

Australia goes red and gold

Two Australian landscapes make the top 20.

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park ranks ninth globally, scoring 88.22. Watching Uluru deepen from ochre to rust as sunset creeps in is already one of Australia’s headline experiences and the research puts numbers behind what visitors have long known.

The Flinders Ranges in South Australia follows at number 14, where rugged ridges, red earth and winding outback roads look especially striking towards sunset.

Greece scores four top-20 spots

Greece has more destinations in the top 20 than any other European country.

Lindos Acropolis in Rhodes ranks tenth, followed by Rhodes Town at number 17, the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion in nineteenth place and Navagio Shipwreck Beach in Zante at number 20.

There’s plenty of variety between them too. You could be watching the day wind down from an ancient hilltop acropolis, wandering the honey-coloured lanes of Rhodes Town or looking across the Aegean from a centuries-old temple.

Cyprus also earns a place, with Paphos City Centre ranking sixteenth.

Red-rock sunsets in the USA

Two US locations make the global ranking.

California’s San Joaquin Valley ranks eighth, while Sedona in Arizona comes in at number 15. In Sedona, the sandstone buttes and mesas feel almost otherworldly by late afternoon, which suits a place long associated with spirituality and wellness.

How the Golden Hour Score was calculated

The ranking looks at six meteorological and environmental factors that can influence golden-hour conditions.

Cloud cover carries the greatest weighting at 35%, followed by light pollution at 20%. Rainfall and artificial brightness account for 15% each, windspeed contributes 8% and average sunset duration makes up the remaining 7%.

Together, these factors produce each destination’s final Golden Hour Score.

Of course, weather data can tell us where conditions stack up particularly well, but not every brilliant sunset can be measured by weather data. A catamaran off Grace Bay, dinner beneath Krabi’s cliffs or the first DJ track of the evening beside a Maldivian lagoon? We’ll happily make room for those too.
