Days 2-3 Rome, Italy
Enjoy a couple of days discovering one of the most celebrated cities on Earth, steeped in history with many fascinating monuments and sites worth visiting. You could start by visiting the Colosseum, the multi-tiered amphitheatre used for gladiator fights and public spectacles at the height of the Roman Empire. Nearby you’ll also find the historic Roman Forum and Palatine Hill – they’re part of the same archaeological site and a lovely area to walk through and see impressive Roman ruins first-hand. All three of these places can actually be visited in one go with a readily available guided tour. The Trevi Fountain is another must-see, one of Rome’s various romantic spots and the world’s largest Baroque fountain – celebrate tradition and toss a coin into the clear waters. For a popular but often less crowded spot, the heart-shaped Villa Borghese is one of Rome’s best public parks. Or head to the Piazza di Spagna early in the morning or later in the day and climb the Spanish Steps; complete the 135-step climb and you’ll be rewarded with lovely views over the pretty fountain and square below. For the chance to tick the world’s smallest country off your bucket list, visit the enigmatic Vatican City; it’s home to the imposing St Peter’s Basilica and stunning Sistine Chapel, and is brilliant for panoramic camera shots and striking architecture. You can wind down after a day of sightseeing by taking a stroll through the surrounding neighbourhoods – explore narrow cobbled streets and visit charming market stalls, or stop for a taste of unbeatable Italian gelato in one of the many cafés or restaurants dotted around nearby.
