Fairmont Copley Plaza, Boston
The ‘grand dame’ of Boston, the Fairmont Copley Plaza is more than just a hotel stay. With decadent interiors, peerless levels of service and countless stories to tell it will have hotel connoisseurs drooling.
The Fairmont Copley Plaza was built on the site of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and on opening day in 1912 the hotel commanded a 16-month waiting list. Copley Square is a lovely pocket of Boston, and the handsome Beau Arts Fairmont, with its cherry-red awnings and liveried doormen, continues to hold its own in the company of the Boston Public Library and Romanesque Trinity Church. Inside, prepare for high drama. The hotel’s mosaic-floored entrance, ‘peacock alley’, will bring funnel you into a palatial lobby with a soaring, sock-it-to-you coffered ceiling and enough marble, gilt, and mirrors to make Louis XIII blush. Thankfully it’s a little easier to get a room today. Many of the 383 classically furnished rooms and suites overlook Copley Square -- and even the lower-rung Fairmont Room comes with a cloud-like pillow-top mattress and Keurig coffee maker. For a slice of old-school Boston pop into the legendary OAK Long Bar and Kitchen, where the great and good of Boston have been swirling Bourbon in crystal for over a century. The all-day menu offers possibly the best breakfast in town – you could let the day slip away here, observing the comings and goings from a stool at the zinc-topped bar. Order a smoked chai Manhattan – a recipe inspired by the English tradition of mixing tea with rum – and soak up the atmosphere. When all’s said and done it is canine ambassador Cori Copley, who is the real star of the show. The black lab owns the lobby and loves ‘walkies’ – but you might have to wait your turn.
