Days 3-4

Auckland

You’ll have two nights to relax and explore Auckland at your own pace while you adjust to your new time zone. There are museums aplenty, as well as viewpoints like Mount Eden and the Sky Tower. We highly recommend heading over to one of the bay’s islands for a different perspective and a slower pace.

Days 5 to 6

Rotorua

You’ll collect a hire car from Auckland and drive to Rotorua, a three-hour journey. Plan a break in your journey to visit Hobbiton Village to tour the movie set featured in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies. Explore this geothermic area known for its geysers, hot springs, and mud pools. It’s also where you can familiarise yourself with Maori culture and spend an evening trying hangi cooked in the ground.

Days 7-8

Napier/Hawkes Bay

Leaving Rotorua’s geothermal wonderland behind, you’re bound for the wine region and the Art Deco charms of Napier. A three-hour drive takes you south to this fascinating town, where an incredible array of beautiful Art Deco buildings make it feel like a movie set. Visit Hawke’s Bay wineries to try the local Pinot Gris and Syrah, then enjoy the fabulous restaurant at Mangapapa, the luxury boutique bolthole where you’ll spend two nights.

Days 9-10

Wellington

A four-hour drive to Wellington brings you to the southern tip of the North Island, where you have time to indulge in the city’s gastro scene or ride the Wellington Cable Car for city panoramas.

Days 11-13

Marlborough Sounds

The Interislander Cook Strait Ferry transports you to South Island today. Consider booking the Premium Lounge for a comfy seat and complimentary food and drinks. On arrival, you’ll take a water taxi to the Bay of Many Coves, set in a secluded bay with fantastic views of the surrounding scenery. Two nights here allow plenty of wildlife watching, hiking, and kayaking along the coast – or simply enjoying the excellent spa and restaurant.

Day 14-15

Kaikoura

After taking the water taxi back to Picton, you’ll collect your car and take the coast road to Kaikoura a waterfront town with a sweeping Kaikoura Seaward Mountain Range backdrop. Treat yourself to a morning whale-watching cruise and witness the region’s incredible marine wildlife.

Day 16

Christchurch

Your journey south continues, stopping overnight in Christchurch to break up your journey and have some time to explore the city's creative side and resilient attitude.

Days 17-18

Franz Josef

Cross the South Island from west to east on the TranzAlpine Express, taking in some epic landscapes as you go. Spend a couple of nights in the Franz Josef region where mountains meet rainforest meets gloriously wild coastline.

Day 19

Gibbston Valley

Delve into the world of New Zealand wines at Kinross, the world’s most southerly wine-making region and stay among the Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir vines.

Days 20-21

Glenorchy

The tiny riverside town of Glenorchy is your base for the next couple of nights. You may recognise the local mountainous landscapes as they were heavily used as filming locations for Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. You can get out on the wide and winding Dart River, head out on foot on a section of the Alpine Routeburn Track, or just kick back and take in the view.

Days 22-23

Queenstown

Queenstown’s next – New Zealand’s playground. You’ve got a couple of nights here and a full day to explore, whether you’re joining a Lord of the Rings tour, or soaring above the scenery on a gondola, or testing your mettle with one of the more adrenaline-inducing activities.
