Days 1-2

Negombo

After your 12-hour flight from the UK, you’ll touch down in Colombo. You’ll need one night in Negombo to recover and get over the jet lag, so you wake up feel refreshed and revitalised, ready for your adventure around Sri Lanka’s must-see spots.

Wilpattu 3-hour Jeep Safari
Anuradhapura

Much quieter than Sri Lanka’s other popular national parks, Wilpattu offers a genuine sense of wilderness with scientific research on the bio-diversity of the park still in its infancy. This ‘Land of Lakes’ is dotted with water-basins and hidden in the dense forests you’ll find an array of wildlife from sloth bears and spotted deer to elephants and crocodiles. Little is known of the large population of leopards who reside in the park, but next to Yala in the south. this is the second-best place to spot them in Sri Lanka.

Days 3-6

Anuradhapura

You’ll be transferred to Anuradhapura and check into the exceptional Ulagalla, a peaceful retreat set among acres of lush greenery and rich heritage. The remainder of the afternoon is free for you to relax and explore this stunning hotel at your own pace. If you’d like to experience something truly memorable, you may choose to book the Kamatha dinner, a home-cooked Sri Lankan dining experience which will be sure to satisfy your tastebuds.Whilst you’re here, you’ll enjoy a half-day safari in Wilpattu National Park, home to abundant wildlife and beautiful landscapes. You may also wish to go on some other optional excursions, such as exploring the ancient ruins of Anuradhapura or joining a local village drive to learn more about the region’s wildlife – possibly spotting the area’s famed elephants along the way.

Days 7-8

Sigiriya

Sigiriya is the next stop on your journey. Here, you’ll take an early morning hike up Sigiriya Rock, a must do on a trip to Sri Lanka. You’ll also go on Safari in the Minneriya area where you can spot the elephants roaming in their natural habitat. The rest of the time you can fill however you wish – explore Pollonaruwa or the Dambulla Caves.

One of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks, Sigiriya Rock is a sight to behold, towering 200 metres above the surrounding jungle. Formed from magma of an extinct volcano, the fortress was created over 1500 years ago by King Kashyapa and is considered one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning.

Discover the vast history of the plateau at the onsite museum before making the climb up the vertiginous staircases to the summit passing impressive frescoes and the famed Mirror Wall and colossal Lions Platform as you go. From the top, explore the ruins of the ancient civilisation through the remnants of the palace and vast gardens and soak up the panoramic vistas of the jungle covered central plains.

Good to know
For the most pleasurable experience we recommend organising this excursion first thing in the morning or after 4pm to avoid the heat of the day. While suitable for all, the climb to the summit requires a good degree of physical fitness.

Minneriya Jeep Safari
Anuradhapura

If observing elephants in their natural habitat is on your to do list while in Sri Lanka, Minneriya National Park should be top of your list. While elephants can be spotted all year round in huge numbers, during the dry season, between April and October, the park plays host to one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in the world: The Great Elephant Gathering.

As the Minneriya Tank dries up and gives way to a lush grass plain, 300 or more elephants gather in the late afternoon to feed offering visitors an unforgettable spectacle. Home to a host of other wildlife from two endemic monkey species to the Sri Lankan Sloth Bear, the endangered Grey Slender Loris and elusive Sri Lankan Leopard can also occasionally be spotted.

Good to know
Depending on the time of year, guests may be taken to the Hurulu Eco-park (Jan to May) or Kandulla National Park (Nov to Dec) as elephant migrations interchange between all three parks.

Polonnaruwa Kingdom Ruins
Anuradhapura

Brush off your explorer hat as you traverse the ancient second capital of the island and discover the monumental ruins of this glorious garden-city. Dating back to 1070 A.D, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is brimming with history and the on-site museum will soon have you up to speed. The ancient compact city is easy to navigate and filled with impressive architectural structures from the enormous Royal Palace that stands seven stories tall to more personal relics such as the King’s private swimming pool.

During this five-hour tour you’ll have the opportunity to explore many of the city’s highlights including the beautiful white Kiri Vihara Dagoba which archaeologists found when clearing the area from jungle in perfect condition after 700 years. From evocative temples and shrines to the serene Sea Of Parakrama, this is one of the best -preserved sites in Sri Lanka and sure to create lasting memories for years to come.

Dambulla Cave Temple

A fantastic stopping off point when travelling between Habarana or Kandalama and Kandy, the famous cave complexes of Dambulla are a haven for those interested in Sri Lanka’s rich history. Dating back to the first Century BC, this ancient cave temple has been a pilgrimage for Buddhists and Hindus for 22 centuries and is still a place of holy importance to this day. There are over 80 documented caves at the site, but with around an hour to explore, this excursion will guide you through the major highlights which are spread over just five of them.

Adorned with statues of Gautama Buddha and ornate ceiling paintings, the iconic temple is brimming with artefacts depicting the island’s glorious past and is not to be missed.

Days 9-10

Kandy

Settle in for two nights in Kandy. Whilst you’re here, you’ll visit the renowned Temple of the Tooth and take a leisurely walk through the Royal Botanical Gardens, one of the most beautiful green spaces in the country.

Whether time is of the essence or you’re after an introduction to this vibrant city that’s brimming with history and culture, this half day excursion will ensure you don’t miss any of Kandy’s major attractions. Discover one of Buddhism’s most sacred shrines at the golden-roofed Temple of the Sacred Tooth, where the relic tooth of Buddha is housed and explore the spectacular Royal Palace complex – the perfect backdrop for some holiday snaps.

Dating back to 1821, finish your trip with a meander through the delightful Royal Botanical Garden where you’ll find over 100 endemic plants before exploring the rest of the city at leisure or returning to your hotel to unwind.

Day 11

Nuwara Eliya

Travel on to Nuwara Eliya, where you can wander through the lush tea plantations that have made this region famous. If you’d like, you can also opt for the train ride from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, celebrated for its sweeping views of rolling hills and emerald‑green estates and a highlight for many travellers.

Ceylon Tea Picking Experience

The story of Ceylon tea begins over 200 years ago when Sri Lanka was still a British colony. With its alchemy of land, sun and rain the island provides the ideal climate for its cultivation. For those looking to delve deeper into the cultivation process and history of Sri Lanka’s greatest export, this immersive tea picking experience is not to be missed. A good cup of tea starts in the field and you’ll begin by observing the fine art of tea plucking before heading back inside and learning all about tea processing with a thorough factory visit. Much like wine, each batch of tea must be taste-tested, and you’ll get a quick masterclass on what to look for from your knowledgeable guide.

After all that learning, end the day with a refreshing cup of Ceylon Tea straight from the plantation and a newfound appreciation for the hard work that goes into every cup.

Scenic Train Journey - Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

Depart from the hotel and transfer to the train station and board the train that will take you up towards Nuwara Eliya. As you ascend into the Hill Country, the train passes through rolling tea plantations and verdant forests and you’ll understand why this journey has been named as one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. Disembark at Nanu Oya station and transfer to your Nuwara Eliya hotel by road.

The train journey is based on tickets in the best available class, air-conditioned carriage, where available. It includes lunch or high tea depending on journey time (after the rail journey at a local restaurant), taxes and service charges.

Days 12-13

Ella

You’ll continue to Ella, a laid-back mountain town surrounded by sweeping views and lush hill country landscapes. You’re free to relax, wander through the village, or venture out on your own. If you’d like a little more adventure, our Ultimate Ella excursion offers a full day of activity, including a climb up Mini Adam’s Peak and a thrilling zipline ride across the valley.

Embark on a full day excursion visiting the highlights of Ella. Rise early in the morning and get your hiking boots on for a trek up Adam's Peak, one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful natural landmarks. The hiking level ranges from moderate to hard, but by no means are you expected to complete it if you feel like you don’t want to.

This will be followed by a visit to the iconic Nine Arches Bridge; be sure to have your camera at the ready in case you see a train passing over this famous bridge. Then, you'll head to the stunning Ravana Falls and see the Dhowa Temple, before taking a ride on the Flying Ravana Zip Line. This double wire zip line, stretching over half a kilometre, means you can ride in pairs and have a bird's-eye view of the breathtaking landscapes. After this adrenaline-pumping activity, you'll end the day with your feet up poolside with a cocktail in hand at the Ravana Pool Club. Get your dose of fun and serenity with the Ibiza vibes of this pool club, which perfectly overlooks the mountain views of Ella. After 3 hours soaking up the unique surroundings, you'll then be driven back to your hotel.

Days 14-15

Yala

Travel south to Yala for a two-night stay amid the peaceful jungle. Over the next couple of days, you’ll head out on two half-day jeep safaris, exploring the park’s diverse habitats as you look for elephants and, if luck is on your side, catch a glimpse of Yala’s elusive leopards.

Days 16-17

Galle

Round off your trip with a relaxing stay on the southern coastline, just moments from the historic Galle Fort. An expertly guided tour is included, with time afterwards to stroll through the fort’s charming streets, visit local cafés or simply enjoy the ocean breeze. Don’t miss the lighthouse at sunset, a perfect finale to your Sri Lankan adventure.

Get a glimpse of Sri Lanka’s fascinating past as you wander through Galle’s winding streets. You’ll explore the 17th-Century Dutch-built fort which is enclosed by thick ramparts and bastions, and is surrounded by the Indian Ocean on three sides. Highlight attractions within the walls include the Dutch Reformed Church, Meeran Mosque, the National Maritime Museum and the lighthouse – an icon of Galle. You could dip into boutiques, browse galleries and pause for a lunch at a local restaurant.
