Alhambra Boutique Hotel Losinj

A chic, contemporary take on a pair of Art Nouveau villas, against a postcard-pretty backdrop.

Lošinj is often overlooked for its southern siblings Brač and Hvar, but this unspoiled island is the understated jewel in Croatia’s crown. Its beauty lies in its simplicity: the sweet scent of pine drifting from its forest-cloaked interior; bays that look like a giant has taken bites out of the coastline. It’s in one of these secluded enclaves that  you’ll find Alhambra Boutique Hotel Lošinj.

The tranquil hideout hugs the seaside promenade of Čikat Bay, a 15-minute walk from the baroque Venetian fishing village of Mali Lošinj. The hotel is a glorious mish-mash of styles: a modern mosaic-adorned building connects two historic villas – the Art Nouveau Villa Augusta, built in 1908, and sister Villa Alhambra, which sprang up four years later.

Villa rooms and suites are rooted in time, with a chic edge achieved with Murano glass chandeliers and marble-topped tables, while the newer wing is more contemporary – think glass sculptures, copper lamps and egg-shaped bathtubs. Pick a Deluxe Room for tantalising forest views or go all out with a luxurious two-bedroom Augusta Grand Suite, where the rich herby aroma wafts across not just one but three furnished balconies – all with gleaming bay views.

These herbs feature in the Alfred Keller restaurant (named after Villa Alhambra’s architect), scattered atop day-fresh Adriatic fish or infusing Cres lamb with flavour. The fine-dining venue comes with the much-coveted Gault et Millau stamp of approval. There’s also a more casual beach bar serving food right on the water’s edge, next to the hotel’s private jetty, which is dotted with sun loungers and parasols. You can swim here, or there’s a seawater pool at the spa, along with Finnish and Turkish saunas and treatment rooms for massages and body therapies.
