Leopards up close and personal
Perhaps what makes the Cinnamon Wild so memorable are the nightly visits from elephants, the magnificent sunsets, sitting by the pool watching the water buffalo in the lake opposite or the great food but our most vivid memories were from the safari we took from the hotel into the Yala National Park. We were treated to so many close encounters with all the park had to offer but what surpassed them all was seeing a fully grown male leopard from only a few meters. Perhaps we were lucky but seeing that leopard so close provided a memory that will last forever.
Stayed here to explore the safari at Yala National Park. The hotel is in the middle of a larger area of the national park. You get an individual chalet. Wooden chalet (like a cottage) in the midst of serene surroundings oft visited by guests from the wild. Nothing to worry, just keep the doors closed and you shall be fine. No problems walking around until dusk. Post sunset, you will be escorted into the common areas by a torch bearing staff member. Lavish buffet spread for both breakfast and dinner.Went for the safari in the early morning, you can either book it with them or directly with some independent safari jeep drivers. They packed nice breakfast to take to the safari as well. There are 2 restaurants on site and a pool. One restaurant serves ala carte and the other buffet. I quite liked the ala carte as well even though options were limited, the food preparations were unique and satiable to the palet. There is a beach close by from where you need to return before sunset. Book your dinner package with the hotel as there aren't options to venture out in the evening. All in all, a very unique experience in the midst of the jungle.
Needs a lot of changes to improve
One of the selling points is that this is close to Yala and animals do wander through the resort. Keep in mind this is not th eonly hotel where this happens. I found the Jungle chalet to be very dark and poorly lit - maybe some brighter bulbs could be used ? The menu at the a la carte restaurant was very limited with a poor choice for lunchtime snacks. This doubles as the bar area where service is extremely slow with staff mainly in groups talking to each other. The main buffet area is extremely hot and could do with some fans/aircon and has a very limited selection if you don't want a curry (of which there are many) Drinks prices are much higher than I experienced in other parts of Sri Lanka. Pool area is becoming neglected with weeds growing between the slabs many of which are loose and uneven. Hats off though to the pool guy who is extremely hard working and helpful.
REALLY ? RAP MUSIC !
Just went to the rooftop bar to enjoy the sunset with a nice cocktail. Spoilt by the fact we had to listen to rap music from the t.v behind the bar. As we were the only ones there and clearly not of a generation that would enjoy such music, it seems this was put on for the benefit of the barman. Guests, Paying, Who are the. Hope things improve for our stay.
Visited for a 2 night stay at the end of a week of safaris. Had a lodge at the edge of the complex with the beach just behind a lush green barrier. The lodge was on stilts so we had a good view of the wild elephants and wild boar that came to visit !!! On our veranda our “guests” included a bat..a rat snake...black faced grey langurs...frogs...and chipmunks. At night you need an escort at night because the elephants can be dangerous. The lodge was beautiful and very well appointed. Food was excellent and the staff were amazing...as were ALL the people we met in Sri Lanka. There is a wonderful beach but wild animals do roam there so we were escorted by a wonderfully friendly guard who also took photos for us this place was exactly what we wanted. Thank you a wonderful experience.
