THE BEST BEACHES IN CRETE
Crete has a beach for every mood, from wild lagoons with glass-clear water to palm-fringed coves and stylish resort shores. It’s the largest of the Greek islands and its coastline stretches for miles, so you can move from quiet coves to chic seaside towns in a single day. Here are some of our top picks..
Balos Lagoon – best for wow-factor views
One of Crete’s most photographed beaches, Balos is breathtaking. A swirl of turquoise lagoon and white sand framed by rugged headlands where goats graze, it’s reached by boat or a steep track – but worth every bit of effort. Wade through shallow, shimmering water and gaze across to Gramvousa Island’s ancient Venetian fort. If you’re driving in summer, set off early as the small car park fills fast.
Elafonissi Beach – best for pink-tinged sands
Crete’s most famous beach lives up to the hype. Offshore sandbars and crystal shallows turn the water a dreamlike shade of blue, while crushed shells give the shore its soft blush tint. It’s ideal for paddling, picnics and long, lazy swims. Like Balos, it gets busy in summer, so go early or late in the day to soak up the magic without the crowds.
Kissamos Bay – best for laid-back luxury
On Crete’s tranquil northwest coast, Kissamos Bay is all soft sands, calm seas and hazy sunsets. This peaceful stretch has a more authentic, under-the-radar feel than some of the island’s busier spots, with a handful of seafront tavernas and mesmerising views across the bay. From 2026, Ikos Kissamos will bring five-star style to this serene setting, raising the bar for all-inclusive luxury on Crete’s west coast.
Elounda & Plaka – best for timeless glamour
Over on Crete’s northeast coast, Elounda has long been known for its high-end hideaways and gentle bays. The calm, sheltered waters are ideal for paddleboarding or sailing across to the island of Spinalonga, shimmering mysteriously just offshore. Stay in style at Domes of Elounda, Autograph Collection, Domes Aulus Elounda or Elounda Gulf Villas, where infinity pools and sea views come as standard.
Matala – best for boho vibes
Once a 1960s hippy hideout, Matala still keeps its easy, free-spirited feel. Its cliffside caves, once home to ancient tombs and later wandering travellers, glow golden in the late-afternoon sun. Set on Crete’s south coast, it’s one to pinpoint on a road trip – a laid-back spot where beach cafés spill onto the sand and sunsets turn the cliffs coral.
Chania – best for culture and coastline
In Chania, you don’t have to choose between culture and coast. The beaches here are within easy reach of the Old Town’s harbour cafés and Venetian architecture. Nea Chora is perfect for a quick swim followed by fresh seafood, while Agii Apostoli has gentle surf and a local buzz. Stay nearby at Domes Noruz Chania or Domes Zeen Chania, both perfectly placed for beach days and sunset strolls by the sea.
