Set on a private sandy beach, this lively resort offers an impressive array of activities, with an excellent culinary offering and regular live entertainment.
On holiday, some days call for a culture fix while others demand nothing more strenuous than sinking your toes into powder-soft sand. Agapi Beach Resort has got you covered. This box-ticking retreat is around 15 minutes from central Heraklion, with its treasure-trove museum of archaeological wonders and the Bronze Age ruins of Knossos, considered to be Europe’s oldest city. That’s only if you can drag yourself away from the resort, of course, with its three outdoor pools, eight restaurants and bars, spa, sandy beach, watersports kiosk and evening entertainment. There’s very little reason to leave here, and a kids’ club, jam-packed activity programme and generous all-inclusive plan add extra reason to linger on.
Why we love Agapi Beach Resort
-
It’s handily located a 15 minute drive from Heraklion, with a beautiful sandy beach on the doorstep.
-
It’s a great choice for families with a kids’ club, playground and tons of activities, from tennis to watersports (non-motorised ones are complimentary).
-
The resort hosts various cultural experiences, from wine and olive oil tasting to Cretan cooking classes and grape stomping.
-
It’s home to four bars and four restaurants, offering plenty of choice on the dining front, with regular live entertainment at the outdoor theatre.
This resort has earned internationally recognised certification that conform to standards set by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
Rooms
The 320 rooms and suites are cool and comfortable, with marble bathrooms and private balconies or terrace. Book a Double Room for sparkling sea views or upgrade to an Exclusive Bungalow for a white-washed cocoon with blush-pink accents and wood furniture. Some overlook the pool, others have direct access for a suite-to-swim perk. Large groups should opt for the Two-Bedroom Maisonette, which has a pair of separate pads connected by a shared entrance – ideal for friends or older families.
Facilities
Four restaurants and four bars serve everything from Greek classics to Italian delicacies. There are rotating themed nights at the Main Restaurant, plus a lively barbecue and bonfire with chefs cooking on the grill (reservations required; extra fee).
Main Restaurant
This indoor-outdoor buffet dining venue offers continental breakfasts, light lunches and theatrical dinners with show cooking stations. The vibe is relaxed – think rattan chairs, potted palms and a canopy of hanging basket lights – and the regular themed culinary evenings are a highlight.
Taverna Akrogiali
An azure-blue façade conceals the team of chefs rustling together Greek favourites at this atmospheric taverna. But it’s the stone terrace, with its rough brick pillars and emerald-green foliage, where diners gather on balmy days to reap the rewards – tasty Cretan specialities and plates of mezze.
Piazza d'Italia
Wash down Italian cuisine with the finest wines at this elegant eatery, featuring an outdoor courtyard decked out with white-linen tables. Do as the Italians do and finish it off with a punchy espresso.
Taka-Taka
This street food-style haunt serves up Mediterranean small plates, from Greek gyros to Cypriot halloumi, along with Lebanese, Egyptian, Turkish and Moroccan flavours.
1978 Bar
Grab a low-slung armchair on the outdoor terrace at this relaxed bar, serving cocktails, draft beer and soft drinks under the all-inclusive package.
Pool Bar
Sip on a tipple or cool down with an ice cream while lounging by the pool.
Beach Bar
Pair sea views with ouzo at the Beach Bar; don’t miss the chilled parties and lobster evenings hosted here throughout the summer.
Garden Theatre
Catch a live show at the outdoor theatre and wash it down with a drink or two at this relaxed venue, open on show evenings (three to four times weekly)
We love Taverna Akrogiali for its traditional Cretan mezze dishes served on a romantic terrace.

Head to the gym for a workout or opt for one of the resort’s fitness classes, which span aerobics to gymnastics, yoga and beyond. It’s also home to two floodlit tennis courts (lessons at extra charge).
On land, you can try your hand at tennis, bocce, table tennis, and water polo. The head gardener also leads tours of the grounds each week for guests wanting to learn more about the local flora and fauna, with a stop at the resort’s organic kitchen garden to hand-pick produce. The resort also hosts various cultural and culinary experiences, from Cretan cooking classes – think bread-baking and cheese-making – to wine and olive oil tastings, grape stomping workshops and Raki-distilling lessons.
There’s a great watersports centre here; stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing are complimentary, and for a supplement you can also enjoy waterskiing, Jet Skiing, parasailing and the ‘crazy sofa’, hauled along by a speedboat.
The resort has implemented water, energy and waste management plans and is working towards eradicating single-use plastic. Locally sourced products are used where possible to support local businesses and ensure sustainable supply chains.
As well as family-friendly accommodation, there are a range of activities to keep little ones busy. The kids' club has supervised activities for children aged 4 to 12 and there is a teenager's programme for 13 to 17 year olds. Facilities include a children's playground and paddling pool with high chairs and a children's corner in the main restaurant.
The Crete Golf Club is around a 35-minute drive away.
