Indonesian Island Hopper

A 12-night trip that takes you from Bali to Lombok via Gili Meno.

Indonesia has thousands of islands, but this trip keeps things focused on three that fit perfectly together: Bali, Gili Meno, and Lombok. They’re close enough that each feels like the next chapter, not a whole new book.

Days 1-3

Sidemen, Bali

Sidemen eases you in gently. We recommend staying three nights at Wapa di Ume, a relaxed hillside hotel surrounded by rice fields. It’s a good place to slow down after the flight and get a feel for everyday Bali. You can join a cooking class or take the short, guided walk at 7am if you’re up early. There’s a proper spa and a yoga pavilion for when you want to unwind. A highlight of your stay here will be the included exploration of central Bali in a vintage VW vehicle.

Central Bali’s Highlights by Vintage VW Jeep

Bali

A vintage 1970s-style VW Jeep tour is one of the coolest ways to explore central Bali. Jump on board this classic icon and travel to your first stop: the 1000-year-old Batuan Temple, which is a village and ancestral temple that’s cared for by the residents of Batuan. Your driver will then continue through local villages to artsy Ubud – the cultural heart of Bali and a hub of traditional crafts and dance. Highlights here include impressive Puri Saren Agung Palace, the arts market and famous monkey forest, where playful brown macaques dart around the ancient trees and ornate statues. A scenic drive through rice fields and sleepy mountain villages then awaits to reach imposing Mount Batur. The view of the volcano, caldera and Lake Batur is breathtakingly beautiful, so make sure you’ve got your camera ready. Next up is a drive down into the crater to the lava fields, where you’ll have time to wander through the unique rock formations. Lunch-with-a-view will be served on the edge of the crater before your journey continues to the tranquil and lesser-visited temple of Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu – a beautiful water temple built on a natural spring and surrounded by lotus ponds and thick forest. The final stop will be Tegallalang, where giant steps have been carved into the landscape to create lush rice terraces.

• Duration: full day
• Departing daily from Sideman, South Bali, Seminyak or Central Ubud hotels
• Operates year round
• Private experience

Good to know
We recommend bringing a light jacket or jumper and long trousers as it can get cool in the mountains. A sarong will be provided to allow you to cover up for temple visits.

Days 4-6

Candidasa, Bali

From Sidemen, it’s a two-hour drive to the east coast. The beach in the morning, time dedicated to a long-neglected novel, perhaps a massage in the afternoon. Nearby villages like Tenganan and Penglipuran offer a window into Balinese tradition, and the water palaces of Tirta Gangga and Taman Ujung show the island’s grandeur. There’s so much to do from your beachside base including treks, water purification ceremonies and museum and temple visits, all of which are bookable locally.

Days 7-9

Gili Meno

A morning boat takes you across the Lombok Strait to Gili Meno via Gili Trewangan. There are no cars here, just bicycles and sandy paths that loop the island in under an hour. The reef is close enough to swim to, and turtles often appear just offshore. Fill your days with snorkelling, paddling or doing very little. Evenings are about sunsets and music drifting from a nearby beach bar.

Days 10-13

Lombok

A short boat ride brings you to Lombok, where the beaches stretch wide and the pace slows even further. Stay at Tugu Lombok, a relaxed hotel built around Indonesian art and antiques. If you want to move, there are rice terrace walks, local markets and craft villages that all make good half-day trips and mix up your days. We’ve included a fabulous rice terrace trek, the perfect way to get to know the local area and rural way of life.

Lombok Rice Terrace Trek

Lombok & Gili Islands

There’s no better way to get back to nature on Lombok than by donning your trainers and heading for the rice terraces. You’ll begin by heading to Aik Bukak in the National Park of Mount Rinjani, here you'll leisurely walk into the heart of the rice field terraces and marvel at the stunning agricultural landscapes. After the hike, you'll then visit Pengenem Daye Village and witness the art of traditional craft making. Here, there's an opportunity for you to get involved and have a go at frying the renowned local coffee of Lombok. Make sure to take in the natural beauty of Janggot Waterfall at the foot of Mount Rinjani before having lunch at a local restaurant. The final stop on this day trip is Gunung Sari where you can explore the temple of Pura Agung Gunung Sari, which makes an impression with its three pagoda-like places of worship.
