Sri Lanka Beach Hopper

An eight-night multi-stop holiday taking in the west and south coasts as well as Yala National Park.

Dip your sand in the toes on the Teardrop Isle as you go from golden shore to golden shore. This is a relaxed holiday where coast, culture and nature mingle; there’s a sprinkling of everything that makes Sri Lanka special but with a focus on the oceanfront. And in Sri Lanka, no two beaches are the same: Yala is wild and wonderful, the south is all about the spectacular coves and bays, while the west trends more sweeping and golden.

Day 1

Negombo

First up is a night in Negombo, the closest of our featured beach resorts to the airport. You’ll be shaking off the flight and stretching your legs on stunning shores in next to no time. We’ve got a couple of hotels right on the beachfront and a delightful boutique spot inland to choose from, but either way, you’ll be in for a chilled first night in Sri Lanka.

Days 2-3

Yala

This is where beach meets the bush of Yala National Park; it’s wild and wildlife packed. A couple of nights here will give you the chance to head into the park to seek out leopards, elephants, crocs, sloth bears and more (we’ve included a half-day game drive), but also take in the beauty of this corner of coast in your own time from your chosen resort.

Yala 3-hour Jeep Safari
Yala & Udawalawe

If you’re short on time or simply want to add in a safari trip while staying in a resort along the serene southern coast, this three-hour excursion is just the ticket. With your own private guide, it won’t be long before you’re spotting herds of elephants walking across the grassy plains and buffaloes and deer cooling off by a watering hole.

Spot monkeys playing in the treetops, crocodiles popping up for air and eagles soaring in the sky above – the park is teeming with life. With one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, Yala is a prime location to encounter these elusive creatures in their natural habitat and bird enthusiasts won’t be disappointed either with a huge collection of migratory and endemic species to spot.

• Duration: half day
• Time: 6am to 9am or 3pm to 6pm
• Daily departures
• Operates year round except September to mid-October
• Private experience
• Available for guests on a car and driver itinerary staying in Hambantota, Tangalle, Udawalawe and Yala
• Available for guests staying at hotels in Yala, Udawalawe, Tangalle and Hambantota

Good to know
If not staying in close vicinity to the national park, we’d recommend the afternoon excursion due to the early start of the morning option.

Days 4-5

South Coast

Journey along the oceanfront from the south-east corner to the south-west corner of the island (or a spot in between). The coastline gets slightly less remote but seriously wows with its wild natural beauty thanks to its coves, bays, and beaches that stretch for miles. The options include hot footing it all the way to the outskirts of gorgeous Galle or pausing in Tangalle about two thirds of the way along the south coast. For a bit of culture, we’ve thrown in a tour of Galle – it’s all about variety.

Heritage Galle
Galle

Get a glimpse of Sri Lanka’s fascinating past as you wander through Galle’s winding streets. You’ll explore the 17th-Century Dutch-built fort which is enclosed by thick ramparts and bastions, and is surrounded by the Indian Ocean on three sides. Highlight attractions within the walls include the Dutch Reformed Church, Meeran Mosque, the National Maritime Museum and the lighthouse – an icon of Galle. You could dip into boutiques, browse galleries and pause for a lunch at a local restaurant.

• Duration: 3 to 4 hours
• Begins at 9am
• Operates year-round
• Private experience

Good to know
Museums in Galle do not open on Sundays, Mondays and public holidays.

Days 6-9

West Coast

Golden hours, golden sunsets and wide golden sands await along Sri Lanka’s west coast. Whether it’s a Bentota classic resort, a villa retreat or a bijou boutique, your time here can be all about down time, beach time and ‘us’ time. You can pick between off-the-beaten-track Balapitiya or more buzzing Bentota, both of which have sprawling sands right on the doorstep.

Maldives

If you’re after a different beachy scene to round out your holiday, take the relatively short hop of a flight down to Malé, gateway to the wonders of the atolls of the Maldives. Each coral island is home to its own resort, and there’s a pick for everyone. You can go big and bold with an island that has loads to do, a small but perfectly formed retreat or something in between.
