A sustainable and slow-living beach resort immersed in the tranquility of nature.
Built from local stone and indigenous timbers, Santa Barbara is deliciously wild and natural. Set between mountains and ocean, you’re surrounded by black sands and a saltwater pool. Farm-fresh dining uses bounty from the hotel’s organic gardens and white wines are sourced from the Azorean area. Wellness is a strong pull with SUP yoga, organic spa treatments and water therapies.

Rooms
The 14 studios and 16 townhouses/villas are grouped into blocks dotted around the site, and have an uncluttered interior design based on natural materials such as wood and bamboo, upcycled furniture and a chic neutral colour scheme with highlights of blue and green. The Studios Blue & Green are in one block, with a shared saltwater pool running the length of the building, so you can enjoy a dip straight from your terrace; the Studios Retreat have a private hot tub on the terrace instead. All the other options have a separate living room with sofabeds, one or two bedrooms and different outlooks. We particular like the private outdoor hot tub that comes with the Townhouse One Bedroom Retreat and Townhouse Two Bedroom Retreat.

Facilities
In the kitchen, ‘sustainability’ is no mere buzzword. The imaginative menus at the restaurant, bar and seasonal beach club are based on seasonal, local produce – which for most of the herbs, fruit and vegetables means grown in their own fields and greenhouses for true ‘farm-to-fork’ dining. The result is food so deliciously fresh, it provides nourishment for the soul as much as for the body.

Sustainability is the watchword at the Restaurant where 80 per cent of the vegetables come from the resort’s farm.
Bar & Pool Bar
Here there’s a menu of casual bites including sandwiches, salads and heartier offerings such as fish and chips.
Beach Club
The breezy Beach Club is open from 11am for brunch and drinks.
Whether you’re enjoying a spinach and garlic omelette for your made-to-order breakfast or Azorean squid with buckwheat and salsa verde for dinner, you can be sure that the ingredients could hardly be more local and seasonal.

There’s soul-and-body nurturing on offer at the wellness centre, whether you opt for a soothing massage in a bamboo shack overlooking the beach or a yoga session on a paddleboard.
Spend the day on the hotel's farm, explore the island's thermal baths or go in search of whales on a boat excursion.
The beach at Santa Barbara is perfect for surfing. You may prefer to explore the coastline by kayak or discover the underwater world on a diving or snorkelling adventure.
Environmentally friendly practices include energy efficiency, rainwater harvesting and an onsite organic farm.
