Journey Through the Clouds & Alaska Cruise
Rocky Rails & Scenic sails

This is a wish-list adventure for fans of wildlife, outdoor adventures and epic landscapes. Set off on a journey on the Rocky Mountaineer and cruise the coast of British Columbia and Alaska.
Itinerary overview
Trip notes
Before your cruise
We’ve picked a classic to set the really wild tone of your whole holiday: a trip through the Rocky Mountains from Banff and Jasper and into British Columbia. The train ride between Jasper and Vancouver is a bucket-list moment. An alternative to this western exploration is a few days each in four of eastern Canada’s cities: Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Québec City.

Trip notes
All aboard
Winding your way at a glacial pace through the Rockies cannot be beaten. And the Rocky Mountaineer train is the way to do it in style. There are two levels of service on board, SilverLeaf with its single-level carriages, and the highly recommended GoldLeaf (pictured). This elevated service has bi-level coaches with full glass-dome windows and an outdoor viewing platform.

Trip notes
On the wild side
The constant theme on a Canada-meets-Alaska holiday like this is wildlife watching. Whether it’s by chance from the train, the deck of the MS Koningsdam, or it is during an add-on excursion, every sighting of a bear, whale, otter or eagle is unforgettable. You can increase your chances by arranging tours in Banff, Jasper, Vancouver and at each Alaska port of call.

Trip notes
HAL in Alaska
You’d be hard pushed to find a cruise line that has a deeper knowledge and better connection with the communities of Alaska than Holland America Line. They were here before it was even a state, operating the first cruise in the region all the way back in 1947. They have more wildlife-spotting chances than any other line and they guarantee that you’ll see a glacier (or you’ll get some cruise credit).

Day 1
Calgary, Canada
Land in Calgary and get some serious beauty sleep – the mountain adventures begin tomorrow.

Days 2 to 3
Banff, Canada
Banff is a breathtaker and the first proper holiday stop. The Rockies are a constant backdrop for lake shore hikes, canoe rides and trips on peak-reaching gondolas.

Days 4 to 5
Jasper, Canada
Ready for the drive of a lifetime? Hit the Icefields Parkway and cross into Jasper on a day-long park to park trip which includes a ride on an Athabasca Glacier Ice Explorer and a visit to the gravity defying Glacier Skywalk. Jasper itself was made for deep canyon-adjacent wanders and melt-water lake boat trips.

Day 6
Kamloops, Canada
Now it’s time for the rail journey of a lifetime: the bucket-list topping Rocky Mountaineer. Stay one night in the city of Kamloops before continuing on to Vancouver.

Days 7 to 8
Vancouver, Canada
Arrive late in the evening and spend the following day exploring. A couple of must-visit sites include Stanley Park and Granville Island.

Day 9
Vancouver, Canada
It’s time to set sail. Head to the terminal to board your home for the next seven nights.

Day 10
Inside Passage scenic cruising
This isn’t a regular day at sea, you’ll be cruising through the Inside Passage up to Alaska.
Day 11
Tracy Arm Inlet Cruising & Juneau, Alaska
Enjoy a day of two halves – in the morning, you’ll cruise through Tracy Arm Inlet, a dramatically narrow fjord. In the afternoon, you’ll stop in Juneau, the remote Alaskan state capital.
Day 12
Skagway, Alaska
Goldrush heritage is plain to see in Alaska’s largest settlement. Secure your spot on the White Pass & Yukon Railroad return trip to Whitehorse for the journey of a lifetime.

Day 13
Glacier Bay
Experience the ‘living ice’ of Margerie Glacier as you cruise through the jaw-dropping Glacier Bay – a real highlight of this incredible cruise (timings weather and ice dependent; dress for inclement conditions).

Day 14
Ketchikan, Alaska
Sail through the Tongass Narrows on the way to picturesque Ketchikan, a town with a rich Native Alaskan heritage and strong salmon fishing industry.

Day 15
At sea
Make the journey back south by sailing back through the Inside Passage.

Day 16
Vancouver
Time’s up but you’ll be back for more Canadian adventures – we can almost guarantee it.
