 Steenberg Hotel & Spa

Down on the farm

Boasting a luxurious spa and 18-hole golf course, all set amongst acres of sprawling vineyards, Steenberg Hotel & Spa is a destination in its own right.

Dating back to 1682, Steenberg was the first registered farm in the Cape. Since its early beginnings, it's grown into a charming boutique hotel complete with luxurious spa, golf course and award-winning restaurants. All of this is set against a backdrop of the beautiful Constantia Valley where neat rows of vineyards produce some of the best Sauvignon Blancs we've tried (all part of our research, honest). Tee off on the estate's golf course, unwind in the world-class spa or relax poolside with a chilled glass of bubbles from the Champagne bar. If all that sounds too relaxing, Cape Town is just a 30-minute hop on the hotel's complimentary shuttle.

Why we love Steenberg Hotel & Spa

  • The food and drink at Steenberg is exceptional, with very low food and wine miles; make sure you treat yourself a wine tasting in the farm's cellar

  • You'll be able to embrace yourself in wine estate life - wander the gardens, cycle or run the trails and take a dip in the pool

  • Hide yourself away in the spa for an afternoon of complete relaxation - an al fresco treatment in the summer can't be beaten.

  • There's a champion golf course, designed by Peter Matkovic, on site. It's constantly on top-100 clubs lists so you'll be sure of an epic round.

As you would expect from a hotel set on a farm, fresh local and seasonally available food is the main focus. And as you would expect for vineyard accommodation in South Africa, the wine on offer alongside your meals is exceptional. Head to Bistro Sixteen82 (named after the year the farm was established for) for some evening tapas, or try out Tryn for bolstering breakfasts and light lunches at the edge of the lawn.

Tryn

Named after the farm's founder, Tryn is a contemporary restaurant that serves an abundance of fresh ingredients with an Asian and Middle Eastern twist.

Bistro Sixteen82

Extending into the exquisite gardens, Bistro Sixteen82 has become established as the region's centre for tapas.

Wine tasting

No visit would be complete without sampling some of the estate's wines which you can enjoy in the Tasting Room (which is a stone's thrown from Bistro Sixteen82). Settings include the cosy lounge, overlooking the vineyards on the terrace or around the oval bar.

Imagine chilling out with massages in the Constancia gardens or in the cool and calm treatment rooms or opting for manicure poolside which are on offer every now and again. There's a real feeling of stillness and natural beauty at the Steenberg Spa - the perfect combo for a wellness break.

Golf is a serious business at Steenberg with the 18-hole course constantly featuring on best-in-Africa (and the world) lists. There are natural features and hazards which include elements of the vineyard as well as pine forests and waterways so it really is a unique spot. And the backdrop is pretty spectacular too. Priority bookings are given to hotel guests and club members so it's well worth staying here if you're looking to enjoy a few rounds.
