Wondering if Thailand’s a good shout for a same-sex honeymoon? Spoiler: it absolutely is. We put some questions to LGBTQ+ expert Louis Hannis to find out what makes Thailand a top pick for couples taking their love on tour.
Why is Thailand such a great choice for same-sex honeymoons?
“Thailand is genuinely one of the world’s most welcoming countries. People are kind, respectful and friendly, whether you’re haggling at a local market or checking into a five-star hotel. There’s a real openness – you’ll find you can be yourselves and feel completely at ease.”
What can couples expect from a Thailand honeymoon?
“A trip full of variety, for sure! Most honeymoons here aren’t spent in just one place. Start with a few nights in Bangkok – there’s nowhere quite like it. Then it’s just a quick hop to the beaches or islands. You always feel safe no matter where you go in Thailand, everyone treats you like you are family.
Some couples go for a bit of adventure, maybe a trip to the River Kwai or a few days in the jungle at Elephant Hills, while others just want spa days, sunsets and good food. If you’ve got extra time, Chiang Mai’s a great add-on for temples, markets and mountain air. Thailand gives you the best of everything.”
Is Bangkok safe for LGBTQ+ travellers?
“Yes, it’s absolutely safe. Like any big city, keep your wits about you, but Bangkok’s very accepting. You’ll find plenty of LGBTQ+-friendly bars, hotels and nightlife – especially around Silom.
Go for a riverside base; it’s a more relaxed part of the city with easy access to everything. My top picks are The Salil Hotel Riverside for its great dining scene and Capella Bangkok for its huge riverside suites and villas, ideal for a honeymoon splurge.”
What are the best Thailand resorts for same-sex honeymoons?
“I wouldn’t single out any resorts as being more LGBTQ+-friendly than others. Thailand’s naturally inclusive, it’s part of the culture, and you’ll find that same easy, unassuming attitude wherever you stay. I usually recommend smaller, boutique-style hotels like The Sarojin or Paresa Phuket for a more personal feel – Thai hosts are known for remembering the little details.”
Where are the top LGBTQ+-friendly beach destinations for honeymooners?
“There’s a mix of headline islands like Phuket and Koh Phi Phi, and smaller, more under-the-radar spots like Koh Samet and Koh Yao Yai. I’d say the best way to do it is to mix things up and go island hopping.
Koh Samui has that smaller-island feel with some beautiful boutique resorts – a stand-out is Rocky’s Boutique Resort; book the private dinner on the beach for a honeymoon-gold moment. Another one I love is Cape Fahn Hotel, set on a tiny private island.
Then the beaches on the mainland are not to be overlooked. Hua Hin’s only around three hours by road from Bangkok, so it’s a great option for that city-and-beach combo. And for the dramatic beach scenes you see all over Instagram? You can’t beat Krabi.”
When’s the best time to go?
“It depends on the region, but generally November to March is the sweet spot for a Thailand honeymoon. If you’re planning a summer trip, the islands on the east coast usually have more reliable sunshine. Even in the wetter months, showers tend to come and go quickly so it’s rarely a trip-ruiner. The bonus of travelling outside peak season is quieter beaches and great hotel value.”
How easy is it to travel around Thailand?
“Super easy. Flights between the major hubs like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Koh Samui run like clockwork and are quick and affordable. Private transfers are the best way to get around by road, and we’ll also arrange any boat connections if you’re island-hopping – we’ll line everything up so your honeymoon runs without a hitch.”
Any cultural tips for same-sex couples visiting Thailand?
“It’s good to remember that modesty and respect are part of Thai culture. Public affection isn’t really a big thing for anyone – Thai or foreign – so keeping it low-key is normal. And as Thais are famously friendly, a smile and a few local words never go unnoticed.”
Can same-sex couples get married in Thailand?
“It’s a really exciting time – Thailand officially legalised same-sex marriage on 23 January 2025, becoming the first country in Southeast Asia to do so. Non-Thais can get married here too, but there’s a bit of admin. You’ll need to have your marriage formally registered at a local district office and there’s some paperwork to arrange through the Thai Embassy beforehand. The process is the same for all couples.
To make it easier, international couples can opt to use a local wedding planner who can guide you through the legalities. Or, have a symbolic ceremony or blessing in Thailand and handle the registration back in the UK.”
Any final tips for planning a Thailand honeymoon?
“Don’t try to do it all. You’ll want to come back, so save something for next time. And chat with us before you go; many of our experts have travelled the world through an LGBTQ+ lens and can share their experience. And definitely make time for a proper Thai massage. You’ll thank me later.”
