Kos holiday highlights

Kos Town is the island’s lively capital, where striking Greek, Roman and Byzantine ruins sit alongside vibrant bars; palm-lined streets showcase Italian buildings; and the imposing 15th-Century Castle of the Knights of the Order of Saint John stands guard over the harbour. Down by the port there are some great cafés and restaurants with views of the many fishing boats and yachts on the waterfront. Kos is also the birthplace of Hippocrates – the famous Greek physician – and travellers can visit the Hippocrates plane tree in front of the castle, marking the spot where Hippocrates used to teach his students. Ten minutes north of Kos Town, the coastal village of Lambi has the best of both worlds; close to the buzz of the centre but with its own choice of quieter seafront tavernas.
