Days 1 to 2

Colombo

Your adventure begins with a couple of nights in the island’s capital, to both reset after your flight, and get to know how one of Asia’s rapidly developing cities ticks. As soon as you land, you’ll be whisked to your hotel (there’s a great choice from an ultra-modern high-rise to a former private mansion) for much-deserved some down before you get your bearings with a Colombo City Walk guided by a local expert.

Colombo City Walk

Sri Lanka

Join a family-friendly tour to explore the Colombo neighbourhood of Pettah on foot in the company of a knowledgeable local guide. Your tour begins by exploring colourful and fragrant markets, including a floating market. You’ll have the chance to see a Dutch church dating to 1749, the Dutch Period Museum and the Red Mosque. Explore places rich in history and religion, such as the Gangaramaya Temple and the Colombo Museum.

• Duration: half day
• Daily departures from Colombo and Negombo
• Operates year-round
• Private experience

Days 3 to 4

Kandy

Your private chauffeur will pick you up and you’ll swap one city for another, heading into the heart of the island for a stay for two in bustling and beautiful Kandy. The city is a cultural capital with relics of the Kingdom of Kandy, sacred shrines and relics, a trio of 14th-Century temples, a peaceful lake, vast tropical gardens and dance performances passed down many generations. An introductory tour and fire dance show will give you a glimpse into the city’s heritage. Most of our featured Kandyan hotels have breathtaking beautiful settings outside the city so you’ll have the best of both worlds – a romantic bolthole to retreat to but just a short hop from the action.

Kandy Highlights and Cultural Fire Dance Tour

Kandy & Nuwara Eliya

Whether you’re a history buff hungry for a taster of Sri Lankan heritage or you’re simply looking for a unique experience to sink your teeth into, the Kandy Highlights and Cultural Fire Dance Tour is a must. Explore the aged walls of the Temple of Tooth before wandering the flourishing grounds of the Royal Botanical Garden and sample an authentic slice of Sri Lankan history. This UNESCO World Heritage Site dates right back to the 14th century, lending an authentic glimpse into times gone by, while the fire dancing ritual has been carefully recreated for an evening performance you’ll never forget. Watch as the fire dancers walk over hot coals and dance among the flames and soak up every second of this jaw-dropping recital.

Days 5 to 6

Ella

The journey from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya will be vying for top spot when it comes to favourite honeymoon moments. The first leg is the drive from Kandy up to Nuwara Eliya, a seriously scenic road trip that takes you up into Sri Lanka’s famed Hill Country. Then its time to embark on the unhurried and winding train journey of a lifetime to Ella amid terraces and tea plantations, past waterfalls and through mist-cloaked forests. Once you arrive it’s time to settle into your hotel – and the hotels up here in the hills are something special. Your full day in Ella is a packed one; it’s all about mountain views, iconic bridges, caves, waterfalls, temples and even tree-top-skimming zip lines followed by three restful hours at a pool club.

Scenic Train Journey - Nuwara Eliya to Ella

Kandy & Nuwara Eliya

The rail journey between Nuwara Eliya (Nanu Oya station) and Ella is arguably the most beautiful stretch of the Kandy-to-Hill-Country journey. For a few hours, the iconic train winds its way up through tea plantations and fruit farms on the way into the beautiful town of Ella.

• Duration: half day
• Time: 3.45pm to 6.30pm
• Daily departures
• Operates year-round
• Group experience

Good to know
The train journey is based on tickets in the best available class, air-conditioned carriage, where available. It includes lunch or high tea depending on journey time (after the rail journey at a local restaurant), taxes and service charges.

Ultimate Ella

Sri Lanka

Embark on a full day excursion visiting the highlights of Ella. Rise early in the morning and get your hiking boots on for a trek up Adam's Peak, one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful natural landmarks. The hiking level ranges from moderate to hard, but by no means are you expected to complete it if you feel like you don’t want to. This will be followed by a visit to the iconic Nine Arches Bridge; be sure to have your camera at the ready in case you see a train passing over this famous bridge. Then, you'll head to the stunning Ravana Falls and see the Dhowa Temple, before taking a ride on the Flying Ravana Zip Line. This double wire zip line, stretching over half a kilometre, means you can ride in pairs and have a bird's-eye view of the breathtaking landscapes. After this adrenaline-pumping activity, you'll end the day with your feet up poolside with a cocktail in hand at the Ravana Pool Club. Get your dose of fun and serenity with the Ibiza vibes of this pool club, which perfectly overlooks the mountain views of Ella. After 3 hours soaking up the unique surroundings, you'll then be driven back to your hotel.

• Duration: Full Day

Good to know
You'll need comfortable shoes, and wear trousers or shorts for the zipline, and swimwear/sunscreen and shades for the pool club.

Days 8 to 9

Yala

The epic Sri Lanka honeymoon experiences continue but the focus shifts from the lofty landscapes of the Hill Country to the island’s famed wildlife. On your included park safari, keep your eyes trained for the elusive leopard, herds of Asian elephants, sloth bears, water buffalo and more than 200 species of birds. There’ll also be time to kick back at your resort or perhaps take a romantic stroll along the wild and wonderful south-east coast beaches.

Yala 3-hour Jeep Safari

Yala & Udawalawe

If you’re short on time or simply want to add in a safari trip while staying in a resort along the serene southern coast, this three-hour excursion is just the ticket. With your own private guide, it won’t be long before you’re spotting herds of elephants walking across the grassy plains and buffaloes and deer cooling off by a watering hole. Spot monkeys playing in the treetops, crocodiles popping up for air and eagles soaring in the sky above – the park is teeming with life. With one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, Yala is a prime location to encounter these elusive creatures in their natural habitat and bird enthusiasts won’t be disappointed either with a huge collection of migratory and endemic species to spot.

• Duration: half day
• Time: 6am to 9am or 3pm to 6pm
• Daily departures
• Operates year round except September to mid-October
• Private experience
• Available for guests on a car and driver itinerary staying in Hambantota, Tangalle, Udawalawe and Yala
• Available for guests staying at hotels in Yala, Udawalawe, Tangalle and Hambantota

Good to know
If not staying in close vicinity to the national park, we’d recommend the afternoon excursion due to the early start of the morning option.

Days 10 to 12

Tangalle

We mentioned that there’s no need for the culture vs beach compromise common in many honeymoon decisions: a stay on the stunning south coast rounds off your holiday of a lifetime and is totally dedicated to doing as little as you want. This is truly time to refresh and reflect on the wild ride of the last few months.
