Three Coasts of Mauritius

Swap beaches and backdrops as you uncover Mauritius’ stylish, wild, and soulful sides in one trip.

More than just a fly-and-flop, this 12-night Mauritius itinerary is designed for those who want more from their holiday than a sun lounger and a stack of paperbacks – although there’s plenty of time for that, too. You’ll move around the island from one five-star hotel to the next, thanks to private transfers that are all arranged for you, swapping coastlines and perspectives, and discovering that Mauritius is far from one-dimensional.

You’ll begin on the east coast, renowned for polished beach resorts and sleek sophistication. Head south and the landscape turns wilder and more untamed, where sugarcane gives way to forested hills and a sense of old-world island life. Finally, the southwest turns up the drama with towering mountains, long waves, and the kind of show-stealing sunsets that stop conversation mid-sentence.

Days 1-4

East Coast

The east coast has a different rhythm from the rest of Mauritius. It’s a little quieter, there’s more breeze in the palm trees, and it claims some of the island’s most photogenic water. The lagoon here is broad, clear, and dotted with little islands, with coral reefs just offshore keeping the sea calm and swim-friendly.You’ll stay in the Frangipani Wing at Shangri La Le Touessrok and can expect to be pampered from start to finish. Your sun lounger on the beach It has a service bell. Need a top up by the pool? Ring and it shall appear. Coco’s Beach house for laid back vibes whilst enjoying lunches by the water (complete with wine trolley), or retreat to a private cabana steps from the ocean. Don’t miss the hotel’s private island Ilot Mangenie either, a ten-minute boat ride for a complimentary three course set lunch served by the sand butler, and spend your day enjoying this sland paradise.

Days 5-8

South Coast

You’ll head south next, where the scenery starts to shift dramatically. This is Mauritius at its most untamed and evocative. The coastline is rugged and windswept, with waves breaking on black volcanic rock and long stretches of wild beach. Inland, sugarcane fields ripple in the breeze. The south has fewer hotels, more nature, and a real sense of the island’s raw beauty. It’s also where you'll find small fishing villages, waterfalls, and hidden trails leading to panoramic views.Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort is your sanctuary in the south, specifically the peaceful adults-only wing. The loungers are plush, the pool is tranquil, and the beach is just a few lazy steps away, with that call button for service available so you don’t have to leave your lounger. There are multiple restaurants, bars, and a seriously impressive golf course. Even if you’ve never held a club, the landscape is worth admiring: green fairways framed by mountains and the ocean or wonder at the nature from your complimentary 4x4 jeep safari, taking in wildlife, flora and waterfalls at the Bel Ombre Nature reserve, just minutes from your hotel.

Days 9-12

South-west Coast

Finally, to the southwest, where the mighty Le Morne Brabant dominates the landscape and everything feels even more cinematic. This is where the mountain meets the ocean, with a thick jungle clinging to cliffs and a reef-fringed lagoon. It’s an area steeped in history, too. Le Morne is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, once a refuge for escaped enslaved people, and now a powerful symbol of freedom in Mauritian culture. This part of the island has the drama, the surf, the views, and some of the most refined hospitality around. At the renowned St Regis Le Morne Resort, rooms come with butler service and the kind of discreet, polished attention that’s hard to beat. The resort sits right on the beach, framed by palms and with the mountain rising just behind it. You’ll want to time your evenings on the beach, where the in-house DJ spins low-key tunes as the sky lights up in pinks and golds. Enjoy one of the amazing dining options on offer at this resort, and spend the £100 food and beverage credit available to you for booking with Kuoni.
