Porto & the Vineyard Valley
On the Grapevine

This two-week journey with AmaWaterways brings together elegant river cruising, vineyard-dotted landscapes, and time to linger in two of Portugal’s most characterful regions.
AmaDouro, AmaVida and AmaSintra are purpose-built for the Douro, each carrying just over 100 guests. The atmosphere on board is relaxed and unhurried. You’ll find a small pool on the sun deck, a cosy lounge, and space to unwind between ports. It feels more like a boutique hotel that happens to float, with the scenery doing much of the talking.
Itinerary overview
Trip notes
Before your cruise
A three-night stay in Porto gives you time to get your bearings and soak up the city’s riverside atmosphere. You can visit the port houses in Vila Nova de Gaia, take a boat trip along the Douro or settle into the local rhythm with a glass of something delicious by the water. It might not be billed as a beachside city, but the beautiful Atlantic Coast is a stone’s throw (aka a short bus ride) away.

Trip notes
Port side
Port tasting is woven into this itinerary and into the history of the region. You can start in the cellars and tasting rooms of the ultra-charming Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river from central Porto before heading to the vineyards of the Douro Valley. Along the way, you’ll learn about the wine’s heritage, meet the families who produce it and sample some of the region’s finest vintages.

Trip notes
On-board inclusions
AmaWaterways is an incredible all-inclusive experience, with fine dining across multiple venues and complimentary premium wine, beer and soft drinks served with lunch and dinner. Daily excursions, immersive tours and guided hikes led by knowledgeable guides are included. There’s also evening entertainment, a daily ‘Sip & Sail’ cocktail hour and free Wi-Fi.

Trip notes
After your cruise
The holiday finishes with some time in magical Madeira, where volcanic hills meet the sea and life slows to a gentler pace. We suggest setting aside at least three nights here but you can always extend it to a week, especially if you’re up for hiking its trails and levadas. Alternatively, you could swap the island for time in Lisbon or the Algarve, depending on how you’d like to end your trip.

Days 1 to 3
Porto, Portugal
It all begins in Porto, where tiled buildings catch the light and steep streets lead to the river. Explore the Ribeira district, with its narrow lanes, lived-in charm and cafés made for lingering. Cross the Dom Luís I Bridge into Vila Nova de Gaia and follow your nose to the historic port cellars and tasting rooms.

Day 4
Porto, Portugal
Board your AmaWaterways ship and get to know your home for the next week. You’ll have time to relax, settle in and raise a glass as the journey upriver begins.

Day 5
Régua, Portugal
Your first port of call is Régua, gateway to the Douro Valley. You might choose to visit the Baroque Mateus Palace or a local quinta for a tasting among the vines. Back on board, dinner comes with a side of steep and terraced hillside views.

Days 6 to 7
Vega de Terrón, Spain
Cross the border into Spain and dock at Vega de Terrón. You can head inland to explore Salamanca, with its golden stone buildings and lively central square, or stick close to the river to revel in the go-slow pace of this quieter corner of Iberia.

Day 8
Pinhão, Portugal
The back part of this out-and-back cruise begins as you pop back into Portugal. Stop at Pinhão, one of the Douro’s prettiest towns (and that’s really saying something). Surrounded by terraced vineyards and overlooked by forested hills, it’s a fine place to pause. You might visit a family-owned wine estate or take a walk along the riverbank.

Day 9
Régua, Portugal
Another call at Régua gives you the chance to delve a little deeper. Perhaps visit Lamego, with its hilltop shrine and winding staircase, or return to a favourite vineyard for one more tasting.

Day 10
Porto, Portugal
Sail back into Porto and spend a final night on board. Take a last stroll along the Cais da Ribeira or raise a glass to your trip.

Days 11 to 13
Madeira, Portugal
Fly to Madeira for a three-night stay on Portugal’s Atlantic island. Known for its lush mountains and dramatic coastline, the island provides a gentle finish to your holiday. Walk through botanical gardens, sample local dishes, go on epic stairway-to-heaven hikes or do nothing but relax by the sea.

Day 14
Madeira, Portugal
A final morning of Portuguese breakfast treats awaits before you’re whisked back to the airport.
