Palazzo del Duca Hotel & Restaurant

Sleep in the Sassi

A restored noble palace in the heart of Matera’s cave city, with vaulted stone suites carved from tuff and views of the Sasso Caveoso and the ‘Gravina’.

Palazzo del Duca sits right inside Matera’s UNESCO-listed Sassi, tucked along a stepped street in the Civita district where cave homes climb up towards the cathedral. Once the noble residence of the Dukes of Santa Candida, the medieval palace has been carefully restored, with suites created both inside the original building and carved directly into the surrounding tuff rock. Today, it forms the heart of Borgo del Duca, a collection of neighbouring restored historic buildings woven into the Civita slope. Your room, breakfast, or dinner may be in a different vaulted space a short walk along the same stepped lane, giving the whole stay more of a historic village feel than a single hotel block.

Why we love Palazzo del Duca Hotel & Restaurant

  • Step outside and you’re in the same maze of streets used as a James Bond backdrop in No Time To Die.

  • You’re staying in a former ducal residence that dates back to the Middle Ages or in historic palazzos, once owned by Matera’s families.

  • Some suites are carved straight into the rock of the Sassi itself.

  • The address puts you within a few minutes’ walk of the Cathedral and main viewpoints.

Dining is part of the wider Borgo del Duca setup, which works more like a small, spread-out village than a single hotel building. Over the past few years, the original palace has been joined by neighbouring restored properties along the Civita slope, with rooms, restaurant and shared spaces located along the stepped pathway between Via Muro and Via San Giacomo. In practice, that means breakfast, dinner or a drink might be served in a different historic building a short walk from your room, all within the same cluster of converted cave dwellings and vaulted spaces.
