This is Laos in full colour: golden temples beside the Mekong, limestone peaks rising above Vang Vieng, turquoise waterfall pools near Luang Prabang, and river journeys through forested hills. Day 1

Vientiane

Arrive in Vientiane, where your guide will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. The rest of the day is free, giving you time to land gently in the capital, perhaps with a first walk along the Mekong or a relaxed dinner close to your hotel. You’ll stay at Surestay Hotel or Salana Boutique Hotel (or similar), both well placed for beginning the journey in the city.

Day 2

Vientiane

Explore Vientiane by tuk-tuk, starting with Wat Sisaket, a graceful early 19th-century temple and one of the few to survive the Siamese invasion of 1827. Continue to Ho Phra Keo, once home to the Emerald Buddha, then pause for lunch before visiting That Luang, the golden national stupa and one of Laos’ most important religious monuments. You’ll also see Patuxai, Vientiane’s monumental arch, before the evening is left free. An optional night tour can take you to the Mekong waterfront, where food stalls, market browsing, and sunset drinks give the capital a livelier after-dark feel. Return to your Vientiane hotel this evening. Meals: Breakfast and Lunch.

Day 3

Vang Vieng

Travel north by train to Vang Vieng, where the landscape changes quickly from capital city to limestone cliffs, rivers, caves, and green valleys. After arrival, hike to Nam Xay Viewpoint for one of the area’s best panoramas, then visit Tham Phu Kham Cave and the Blue Lagoon, a vivid natural pool surrounded by tropical scenery. Later, take a longtail boat along the Nam Song River to Tham Chang Cave, once used as a shelter by villagers during wartime. Tonight, stay at either Inthira Vang Vieng or Riverside Boutique Hotel (or similar). Meals: Breakfast and Lunch.

Day 4

Luang Prabang

Head into the countryside around Vang Vieng by tuk-tuk, crossing into a more rural landscape of rice fields, tracks, and small settlements. Visit Ban Vieng Sa Mai, a Khmu village where you’ll learn about local life, traditional skills, and Lao Hai, a rice wine served in a communal style. After lunch, board the train to Luang Prabang, arriving in the evening. Your base for the next three nights is either My Dream Boutique Resort or Villa Maly (or similar) , each offering a characterful setting for exploring the former royal capital.

Day 5

Luang Prabang

Spend the day outside Luang Prabang, beginning with a responsible elephant experience at MandaLao. Laos was once known as Lan Xang, the Land of a Million Elephants, and today’s visit focuses on conservation rather than riding. Walk with rescued elephants through forested surroundings, watch how they feed and interact, and learn how the project supports mahouts, local communities, and habitat protection. After a picnic lunch, continue to Kuang Si Waterfall, where tiered turquoise pools gather beneath the forest canopy before the main cascade drops through the trees. You’ll also visit the nearby bear rescue centre before returning to Luang Prabang, with time at the night market. Meals: Breakfast and Lunch.

Day 6

Luang Prabang

Begin with tak bat, the almsgiving ceremony in which monks move through the streets at daybreak. Your guide will explain the etiquette, helping you experience it respectfully before a visit to the morning market. Later, cruise upstream on the Mekong to Pak Ou Caves, where hundreds of Buddha images fill limestone chambers above the river. Back in Luang Prabang, visit the Royal Palace Museum and Wat Xieng Thong, one of the city’s finest temples, known for its low sweeping roofs and intricate decoration. This evening, sit down to a Lao set dinner at Moladok Baci House, a local home and restaurant where food, family hospitality, and tradition come together. Return to your Luang Prabang hotel for the final night. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Day 7

Luang Prabang

After breakfast, the day is yours until your airport transfer. Depending on your flight time, there may be a chance for a final walk through Luang Prabang’s old streets, a coffee stop, or one last look at the Mekong before continuing your journey. Meals: Breakfast.
