Tanzania Explorer: Serengeti Safari & Beyond

Safari meets culture on this eight-night small group journey that takes you on a circuit of northern Tanzania.

It hits the must-see spots like the Serengeti and the almighty Ngorongoro Crater but also pops into quieter corners: the baobab-tree-dappled Tarangire National Park – a go-to for elephant lovers – and the rural heartland of Karatu. You'll ride by tuk tuk through vibrant Mto Wa Mbu and stay at Acacia Fram Lodge Karatu, a working farm that supports local communities. Add in a visit to the ‘cradle of mankind’, the Olduvai Gorge, and you’ve got yourself an epic trip.

Day 1

Arrival in Arusha

Welcome to Tanzania. Your first day here is a simple one – you’ll be picked up from Kilimanjaro airport and whisked to your hotel for some post flight R&R. Overnight at Lake Duluti Lodge. Dinner.

Day 2

Tarangire National Park

Your first full day on your journey awaits. Meet the crew and set off on the three-hour drive over to Tarangire National Park where you’ll spend a couple of nights. This is a one-of-a-kind land of giant baobab trees, swamps and vast dry meadows of the Masai Steppe, all teeming with those classic East Africa mammals. There’s no hanging around - your wildlife-seeking adventure begins on the way to your lodge so keep a keen eye on the acacia-scattered plains for signs of life. It's also a paradise for birdwatchers, so be sure to keep an eye on the skies. After a hearty lodge lunch and an hour or two to settle in, the true game drives begin. Overnight at Elephant Springs Tarangire Lodge. Travel time approximately 3½ hours. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 3

Tarangire National Park

Today’s a classic safari day – venturing into the park as the sun rises to watch the wild world wake, spending some down time at the lodge and another drive in the evening. Tarangire is not as well known so safaris here are wonderfully quiet compared to the more popular national parks. And getting that iconic shot of a family of elephants seeking shade or sustenance from a baobab tree should be a breeze. Overnight at Elephant Springs Tarangire Lodge. While you're in Tarangire, you could book an optional sunrise hot-air balloon safari for a different perspective of the plains. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Tarangire Hot-Air Balloon Flight

Tarangire

Tarangire National Park stretches across a vast area of 1,100 square miles and one of the best ways to view it is from the air with a hot-air balloon flight over the park.

Your early start will be rewarded with seeing a magnificent African sunrise as you gently glide over the dramatic landscape with its towering baobab trees. Keep a look out for the vast herds of elephants, big cat predators, zebras and giraffe.

Children aged 7 can experience this balloon safari.

Day 4

Karatu area

The focus shifts from wildlife to culture today as the journey continues back northwards to Mto Wa Mbu, a town with a thriving farming community. It’s all about immersing yourself in local life; you’ll take a tour by tuk-tuk and learn about the 120 tribes of Tanzania and how many of them live in this area harmoniously, how they farm, and what 21st-Century life is like. Then it’s on to the Karatu area for an overnight pit stop at a laid-back lodge that’s located on a working farm that employs people from local communities – it’s a great place to break up the journey between Tarangire and the Serengeti. Overnight at Acacia Farm Lodge Karatu. Travel time approximately 3 hours. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Discover Mto wa Mbu by Tuk-tuk

Lake Manyara

Explore Mto wa Mbu, a culturally-diverse farming hub, on this fun half-day tuk-tuk tour. Visitors really enjoy this local form of transport as they feel immersed in the scenery and daily life. Mto wa Mbu is a successful farming town because it’s set on an escarpment in the fertile Great Rift Valley. It’s also on the road from Serengeti to Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro, making it a key trading hub.

People from over 120 tribes in Tanzania live, work and trade in and around Mto wa Mbu, so it’s very interesting culturally. On the tour, you’ll go through the market and pass homes where women might be hand washing outside or peeling vegetables.

You’ll learn about local farming industries when you stop at rice fields and a banana plantation.  As well as meeting skilled tinga tinga painters, a highlight is visiting the Makonde tribe, who are famous for their wooden carvings. Guests love touring the banana farm, where you get to meet the farmers, taste some plantain and try the banana beer. It’s a beautiful setting for a homemade African lunch.

What’s extra special about the tuk-tuk tour in Mto wa Mbu is that it’s run by a social enterprise that supports Tanzanian women who make biodegradable lunchboxes for Lemala. The organisation also hires local families to cook traditional meals for guests and provides free training for young women from disadvantaged backgrounds to become tour guides.

Day 5

Serengeti National Park

Just picture it: wide open plains, lions lazing in the blazing sun, herds of zebra and wildebeest as far as the eye can see. The Serengeti is the Tanzania spectacle of dreams and it’s the next stop on your trip, and the game spotting starts from the get-go. You’ll drive through the park to your central Serengeti lodge where you’ll base yourself for your savannah adventure. After you’ve made yourself at home and grabbed some lunch, it’s time for your first game drive in the park. Overnight at Sametu Serengeti Camp. Travel time approximately 4 hours. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 6

Serengeti National Park

It’s another classic safari day today starting off with an early alarm call for your next Serengeti game drive – but boy will it be worth it. You may wish to treat yourself to a hot-air balloon flight over the Serengeti. Mornings in the savannah are full of life as the heat of the day is yet to set in; dress in layers and get set for adventure. You’ll be exploring the wildlife-rich Ngare Nanyuki River and seeking out big cats, big elephant herds and the rest of the Big Five. The middle of the day is all about chilling poolside, sipping on a cold beer in the tented bar and taking in the big sky, endless plains views. Then it’s time to head back out into the wilderness for further magical moments. Overnight at Sametu Serengeti Camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Serengeti Hot-Air Balloon Safari

The Serengeti

After watching the crew inflate their craft at the launch site, take flight and drift upwards as the sun rises for an entirely different perspective of the Serengeti.

The bright pink-orange haze visible for miles across the vast savannah; a group of grazing zebra becoming distinguishable from their silhouette forms below; a family of elephants wandering just below you. The photo opportunities are incredible. And, wherever you land, a Champagne breakfast will be laid out for you to enjoy. It’s one of the most highly recommended safari experiences.

Day 7

Ngorongoro Highlands

Swap one natural wonderland for another as you travel east to the jaw-dropping Ngorongoro Crater and surrounding highlands. On the way, you’ll stop off at the incredible Olduvai Gorge, a 30-mile-long, almost 90-metre-deep ravine considered to be the ‘cradle of mankind’. A rich understanding of the evolution of man has been gleaned from the fossil discoveries that have been made here. By the end of the day, you’ll be relaxing at your cosy lodge with some pretty epic highland views. Overnight at Ngorongoro Oldeani Lodge. Travel time approximately 4 hours. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 8

Ngorongoro Crater

An entire day dedicated to the vast Ngorongoro Crater is hard to beat. Dipping down below the crater’s edge into this magnificent natural amphitheatre gives you a one-of-a-kind safari experience. The concentration of wildlife here is unrivalled – it’s seen as a natural enclosure thanks to its steep sides but there are no fences, and some species do leave during the rainy season. The scenes you’ll be taking seemingly have layers of wildlife – gazelle troops backed by wildebeest herds backed by a dazzle of zebra backed by a buffalo gang backed by pretty-in-pink flamingos all framed by the ascending crater walls. This is the perfect place and way to round off your holiday. Overnight at Ngorongoro Oldeani Lodge. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 9

Ngorongoro & departure

All good things must come to an end and this tour finishes as you return to Kilimanjaro airport. Travel time approximately 3 hours 40 minutes. Breakfast.
