This classic hotel has a stunning clifftop location that's perfect for whale watching
Standing on dramatic clifftops in central Hermanus, The Marine’s spectacular setting is one of the best land-based whale-watching locations in the world. It exudes old-world charm with its classic white façade and fresh, seaside-inspired interiors. In whale-watching season between June and November, it's a beautiful base for looking out for the majestic creatures in the water from the public cliffside path fronting the hotel or even from your bathtub in some rooms.
Why we love The Marine Hermanus
-
During the whale watching season, you can sometimes see and hear the whales from your bed
-
There's a tidal pool which is reached by a few steps and a popular spot for swimming within yards of the whales
-
You are just a short walk from the art galleries, shops and restaurants of Hermanus
-
If you are staying over a weekend, browse the stalls of the Saturday market where you'll find tempting local produce and handmade crafts
Rooms
Each of the rooms and suites is clean and bright with a nautical blue and white palette. Sizes and layouts vary from room to room but it's definitely worth considering a sea view so that you can keep a watchful eye on the ocean, especially during whale watching season.
Facilities

With a nod to the 1920s, The Pavilion restaurant deserves special mention for the decadent breakfast spreads including pastries, Franschhoek-caught smoked trout and ingredients for Bloody Marys. You could also sit al fresco in the pretty courtyard, by the pool or on the terrace admiring the bay.
The Pavilion
Open for breakfast and dinner, you can dine indoors in the monochrome interior, at the poolside courtyard or on the terrace overlooking Walker Bay.
The Sun Lounge and Bar
Open from 11am until 5pm, this is a great spot for lunch, afternoon tea and evening cocktails, all served with a backdrop of ocean views.
The seafood platters at The Pavilion combine the freshest ocean flavours including grilled prawns, calamari and the daily catch of the bay.
What's Included
Breakfast at The Pavilion.
Take a dip in the heated pool in the courtyard or relax with a massage or beauty treatment at the indulgent Carchele Beauty Spa. There's a good range of specialist therapies including Theravine™ based on the anti-oxidant benefits from Pinotage grapes.
Watch the surfers at Voëlklip Beach or rent a kayak to explore the coastline. A walk along the dramatic coastal cliff is a must. During whale watching season you can often see the whales breaching and out of season you may still see dolphins, seals and a wealth of sea birds.
