Grootbos Nature Reserve - Forest Lodge

Meaning ‘big forest’ in Afrikaans, Grootbos is surrounded by ancient milkwood trees that are the foundation of the remarkable natural environment that envelops this spectacular place. Nestled amongst the trees you will find Forest Lodge, a luxurious hidden retreat for adults only. Throughout your stay, expert guides will take you on drives and walks through the Cape floral kingdom and its ancient milkwood forests. The way of life here is all about nature and conservation with daily activities including horse riding, mountain biking and coastal cave explorations. Don't miss sundowners as the sun sets over Walker Bay.

Rooms
From the extraordinary free-standing Suites of the adults-only Forest Lodge, you can gaze out at the gently rolling hills covered by fynbos that are abruptly halted by towering peaks. Each Suite has been carefully designed to face towards the setting sun to make the most of the view as the world around you changes colour and glows in a warm orange light.
Stylishly furnished, each suite comes complete with a separate lounge, cosy fireplace and private wooden decks from which you can enjoy the panoramic views.

Facilities
In keeping with the ethos of the hotel, food here is prepared with organic ingredients sourced from the lodge’s Growing the Future project. Expect buffet breakfasts, three-course lunches and six-course dinners. Picnics on the reserve or on the beach can be arranged and dinner is often served in the forest boma, a magical setting of twinkling fairy lights nestled in the milkwood forest.

If you like a more relaxed pace, there’s also the indulgent spa – the perfect spot for a bit of pampering. The three treatment rooms have glass-sliding doors where you can hear the sounds of the forest as the therapists unravel tired muscles.
If you’re looking for adventure, there’s plenty on offer here, with everything from scenic flights to see the whales from above, to 4x4 flower safaris and cave tours. Allow time to visit the Florilegium, where artworks capture the botanicals of the Cape Floral Kingdom.
Grootbos is a world leader when it comes to sustainability. It has its own foundation providing education and sports facilities for the local communities and its Green Futures project has provided many students with horticultural skills to create sustainable jobs for the future.
