Up on a rocky rise in the Rietspruit reserve with the Drakensberg mountains in the distance and a waterhole drawing wildlife in below.
On the edge of South Africa’s Greater Kruger, family-run Khaya Ndlovu shows that a safari doesn’t have to feel full-on to be rewarding. You’re in a private Big 5 reserve, so the key wildlife is all here, but the setting makes it feel more manageable. Being up on a rise helps more than you’d expect. You can actually see the landscape, not just sit in it. That perspective helps everything click faster — where animals move, how the bush is laid out, and what you’re looking at. Drives head out morning and afternoon and tend to be focused rather than long, and when you’re back, there’s still something going on thanks to the waterhole below.
Why we love Khaya Ndlovu Safari Manor
-
It’s the only lodge in the reserve, which creates a quieter, more personal safari experience without giving up on wildlife sightings
-
Being set up on a rocky rise gives you a real sense of the landscape, letting you watch how wildlife moves through it rather than just encountering it moment by moment
-
The infinity pool and main deck sit right on the edge of the kopje, so even time back at the lodge comes with sweeping bush views and the chance of wildlife gathering below
-
There’s a genuine conservation focus here, including rhino rehabilitation work within the reserve, which adds depth to the wildlife experience
Rooms
Rooms are split between the manor house, garden suites, and a couple of safari-style tents, so you’ve got options depending on how you like to stay. Manor rooms are the simplest, comfortable, en suite, opening onto the garden. The suites give you more space and a bit more independence, with sitting areas, terraces and in some cases small kitchen setups. The tents sit closer to the waterhole and feel a bit more in the thick of it, but still with proper beds, electricity and en suite bathrooms. Nothing feels over styled, which suits the lodge. The overall feel is natural rather than over-polished.
Facilities
Food is generous, varied, and has a bit of personality, you’ll see South African flavours come through alongside more familiar dishes, depending on the day. Breakfast is often out on the deck with that wide view in front of you, anything from fresh fruit and pastries to cooked options before a drive. Lunch is more relaxed, light but still satisfying, often taken by the pool or on the terrace. Dinner is where things shift up a notch, sometimes a more formal sit-down, sometimes outside around the fire, with a proper three-course feel and a good South African wine list to go with it. It’s satisfying, unpretentious food that fits the pace of safari life.
What's Included
• fully inclusive of all meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) • scheduled safari activities • park fees • local drinks (including alcoholic beverages, excluding premium brands)
The infinity pool does most of the work here, set right on the edge of the kopje so you’re swimming with a full view over the bush. There’s also a small spa offering massages and treatments, often booked in after a long drive when you’ve been up since before sunrise. Beyond that, this isn’t a place with a schedule or a programme, it’s more about finding a spot, stretching out, and giving yourself time to slow down properly between outings.
Game drives head out in open vehicles with experienced guides, focusing on the Big 5 but often turning up cheetah, wild dog and plenty in between. The reserve is easy to cover, so you’re not spending hours getting from one place to another, which makes a difference over a few days. You can also head into Kruger National Park for a change of scene, or out along the Panorama Route towards Blyde River Canyon. Or just stay put and see what wanders past below you, which is often the easiest win.
The lodge sits within a privately managed reserve where wildlife protection and conservation, including rhino, are part of how the land is looked after.
There are family suites with separate bedrooms and shared living space, which makes things much easier if you’re travelling together. The relaxed setup makes it easy to travel together without feeling like you’re constantly managing logistics.
